In a pivotal move to enhance diabetes care across India, Abbott and MSD Pharmaceuticals have entered into a distribution partnership aimed at expanding access to key oral anti-diabetic medications. Under this agreement, Abbott will manage the distribution of MSD’s sitagliptin-based portfolio—including Januvia, Janumet, and Janumet XR—leveraging its vast reach and deep engagement in India's healthcare system. With India home to over 100 million people living with diabetes, the collaboration seeks to offer sustainable, long-term access to trusted diabetes therapies and reinforce disease management in one of the world's most affected regions.
Strategic Collaboration to Combat a National Health Crisis
In an effort to confront India’s surging diabetes burden, Abbott and MSD Pharmaceuticals announced a distribution agreement that could significantly improve availability of proven oral anti-diabetic treatments. This partnership allows Abbott to distribute sitagliptin, its fixed-dose combination with metformin, and its extended-release formulation across India.
The sitagliptin portfolio, originally developed by MSD, is sold under the well-recognized brand names Januvia, Janumet, and Janumet XR. These DPP4 inhibitors (Dipeptidyl Peptidase IV Inhibitors) have been widely prescribed for the treatment of Type 2 diabetes for more than 17 years in India.
Legacy and Leadership in Diabetes Treatment
Sitagliptin holds a pioneering position in the Indian pharmaceutical market, having been the first DPP4i introduced in the country in 2008. Despite the expiration of market exclusivity, the Januvia and Janumet brands have maintained their prominence, backed by consistent clinical outcomes and widespread physician confidence.
Rehan A. Khan, Managing Director for MSD’s India region, underscored the significance of the partnership. “Our alliance with Abbott allows for a sustainable model to ensure continued patient access to these treatments,” Khan stated, noting that the sitagliptin portfolio has earned both medical and patient trust through its clinical efficacy and safety over the years.
Abbott’s Nationwide Reach: A Platform for Public Health Impact
With its expansive distribution network and broad therapeutic offerings, Abbott is strategically positioned to bolster access to these essential medications. Ambati Venu, Vice President for Abbott in India, emphasized the company’s holistic approach to diabetes care. “We’re addressing the challenges of non-communicable diseases through integrated solutions—from diagnostics to therapeutics,” he said.
Abbott’s portfolio already includes testing solutions, continuous glucose monitoring devices, nutritional products, and a comprehensive lineup of diabetes medications. The addition of MSD’s sitagliptin range further cements its role as a key player in India’s diabetes care landscape.
Addressing a Growing Epidemic
The urgency behind this collaboration is rooted in staggering statistics. India has an estimated 101 million people diagnosed with diabetes, and another 136 million classified as pre-diabetic—placing them at heightened risk for developing the disease. This represents not only a public health emergency but also a considerable economic burden on the healthcare system.
The partnership aims to improve medication accessibility for millions of patients, particularly those in underserved or rural regions where managing chronic conditions can be both logistically and financially challenging.
A Model for Future Healthcare Alliances
As India continues to confront the complex realities of non-communicable diseases, particularly diabetes, the Abbott-MSD partnership could serve as a model for industry collaboration. By combining clinical innovation with operational scale, the initiative exemplifies how the private sector can play a transformative role in public health outcomes.
In the long term, such alliances may become increasingly necessary, not just for delivering medicine, but for creating ecosystems of care that span diagnostics, treatment, and sustained disease management.
