Apple Doubles Down on India Despite U.S. Pressure: Manufacturing and Exports Surge Amid Tariff Talks

Despite recent remarks by former U.S. President Donald Trump urging Apple to scale back its manufacturing operations in India, the Cupertino-based tech giant remains committed to its long-term investment plans in the country. According to government sources, Apple has assured Indian officials that it continues to view India as a strategic manufacturing base for its global supply chain. With 15% of global iPhone output already originating from India and exports to the U.S. sharply rising, the company is poised to expand its production footprint even further. Key suppliers like Foxconn, Tata Electronics, and Pegatron are driving this growth.

Apple’s India Strategy Remains Unshaken

Amid political rhetoric from Washington, Apple has reaffirmed its commitment to India as a cornerstone of its global manufacturing strategy. Government officials in New Delhi have confirmed that the company’s expansion plans remain on track, despite Trump’s public appeal to Apple CEO Tim Cook to scale back production in India and shift operations to the U.S.

The assurances came after Indian authorities reached out to Apple’s leadership following Trump’s comments. “Apple has made it clear that India will remain a major hub for manufacturing its products,” said a senior government source familiar with the discussions. The company, however, has not issued an official statement in response to media queries.

Rising Tensions Over Tariffs

Trump’s comments were part of broader criticism against India’s high tariff regime, although he acknowledged recent negotiations that lowered trade barriers for U.S. tech firms. "They [India] used to have some of the highest tariffs. Now they’re offering us zero tariffs. But I still told Tim [Cook], we want you to build in the U.S.," he said, suggesting that Apple could be doing more to localize production within America.

However, Apple's strategy appears to be one of diversification rather than relocation. While the company is increasing U.S. production, it is also leveraging India’s cost-efficient labor force, growing supply chain maturity, and favorable industrial policies to scale up manufacturing for export markets.

India’s Role in Apple’s Global Supply Chain

India now accounts for approximately 15% of Apple's global iPhone production, with major contributions from contract manufacturers like Foxconn, Pegatron India (majorly owned by Tata Electronics), and Tata Electronics itself. Foxconn has also commenced the production of Apple AirPods in Telangana, primarily for export markets.

According to S&P Global Market Intelligence, iPhone exports from India surged to 3.1 million units in March 2025, up significantly from prior months. Of those, a remarkable 97.6% were shipped to the United States—a move likely designed to get ahead of any impending tariff increases.

The export surge suggests that Apple may need to either ramp up existing production capacity or reallocate devices originally intended for the domestic market. The company’s Indian ecosystem has also become one of the country’s largest employment generators, with an estimated 200,000 workers employed across various suppliers and vendors.

Export Milestones and Economic Impact

In April, Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw revealed that iPhone exports from India had crossed Rs. 1.5 lakh crore (Rs. 1.5 trillion) in FY 2025. This milestone underscores the strategic importance of Apple's operations in India, not only for the company’s own supply chain resilience but also for India’s ambitions to become a global electronics manufacturing powerhouse.

Apple’s supply chain in India has proven to be a significant economic multiplier, generating employment, enhancing export revenues, and advancing India’s reputation in the high-tech manufacturing sector. Analysts suggest that Apple's India production strategy serves as a model for other multinationals seeking to reduce dependence on Chinese manufacturing.

Looking Ahead: A Balancing Act

Apple’s current positioning reflects a delicate balance between geopolitical expectations and commercial pragmatism. While the company is heeding U.S. demands to expand domestic manufacturing, its accelerating investments in India suggest a long-term, dual-market approach.

India offers scalability, government incentives, and an increasingly sophisticated labor force. For Apple, the path forward will likely involve continued collaboration with both Washington and New Delhi to maintain supply chain flexibility without compromising growth or profitability.

Conclusion

Despite political headwinds, Apple’s commitment to India remains strong. As production scales and exports soar, India is cementing its place as a vital cog in the company’s global supply machine. Far from retreating, Apple appears poised to deepen its roots in the Indian manufacturing landscape—solidifying a partnership that promises mutual economic benefit for years to come.
