Balrampur Chini Mills Reports Profit Decline in Q1 Amid Lower Sugar Realisations

By Nitin Mohan Mishra , 15 August 2025

Balrampur Chini Mills Ltd., one of India’s leading integrated sugar producers, reported a year-on-year drop in its first-quarter profit as weaker sugar prices and increased production costs weighed on earnings. While operational revenues remained steady due to robust ethanol sales, the sugar segment faced pricing pressure in both domestic and export markets. Management noted that ongoing diversification into ethanol and value-added products is helping mitigate volatility in sugar margins, but industry-wide challenges, including fluctuating global prices and input cost inflation, continue to affect profitability. The company remains focused on operational efficiency and expanding its ethanol blending capacity.

Revenue and Profit Performance

For the April–June quarter, Balrampur Chini Mills posted a net profit lower than the same period last year, primarily due to reduced sugar realisations. While total revenue remained relatively stable, the contribution from ethanol sales provided a partial cushion against the decline in the core sugar business.

Sugar Segment Under Pressure

The domestic sugar market experienced softer pricing during the quarter, influenced by higher production estimates and limited export opportunities. Global sugar price volatility and restrictions on overseas shipments further dampened realisations. Despite healthy production volumes, the segment’s profitability contracted due to rising input costs, particularly for cane procurement and fuel.

Ethanol Business Gains Momentum

Ethanol sales emerged as a bright spot, supported by government-led blending programs and strong demand from oil marketing companies. Balrampur Chini Mills has been actively increasing its distillation capacity to capitalise on the growing ethanol market, aiming to reduce dependence on cyclical sugar revenues.

Strategic Outlook

The company remains committed to diversifying its revenue base and improving operational efficiency. Investments in capacity expansion, automation, and renewable energy integration are expected to enhance long-term competitiveness. Management emphasised that while near-term sugar margins may remain under pressure, the ethanol segment’s growth potential could provide stability in future earnings.
