Birla Opus Emerges as a Leading Contender in India’s Decorative Paints Market

Birla Opus, the decorative paints brand under Grasim Industries—flagship company of the Aditya Birla Group—has solidified its position as the second-largest player in India’s decorative paints industry by installed capacity, now reaching 1,096 million litres per annum (MLPA). With the commissioning of its Mahad plant and upcoming production at Kharagpur, Birla Opus is rapidly expanding its footprint, targeting a total planned capacity of 1,332 MLPA. Despite Asian Paints maintaining the market lead with over 1,850 MLPA, Birla Opus has carved out over 21% capacity share and a revenue market share exceeding 10%, underpinned by robust investment and strategic expansion in a sector poised for steady growth.

Scaling Capacity: Birla Opus’ Strategic Expansion

Birla Opus has ascended to the position of the second-largest decorative paint manufacturer in India in terms of installed capacity, currently standing at 1,096 MLPA. This milestone was achieved following the operational launch of the Mahad manufacturing facility, marking a significant augmentation of its production capability. The company aims to reach a total installed capacity of 1,332 MLPA as part of its ambitious growth strategy.

The forthcoming trial run of Birla Opus’ sixth plant, situated in Kharagpur, is slated for the first quarter of the fiscal year 2025-26, with commercial production anticipated in the first half of FY26. This facility will further enhance the company’s capacity, bolstering its position within a competitive industry.

Investment and Infrastructure: A Testament to Ambition

Since entering the decorative paints market in August 2021 with an initial capital expenditure of Rs. 5,000 crore, Grasim Industries has aggressively scaled up its investment, doubling the capex commitment to Rs. 10,000 crore by May 2022. To date, the group has invested Rs. 9,352 crore—94% of the total project cost—underscoring its commitment to rapid and efficient execution.

The Aditya Birla Group has established five manufacturing plants across Panipat, Ludhiana, Cheyyar (near Chennai), Chamarajnagar, and Mysore. These facilities were developed as part of a greenfield project involving six simultaneous plants, executed without any project delays or cost overruns, a noteworthy accomplishment in large-scale industrial undertakings.

Market Position and Competitive Dynamics

Birla Opus operates in a highly competitive landscape dominated by established players such as Asian Paints, Berger Paints, Kansai Nerolac, and AkzoNobel India. While Asian Paints leads with over 1,850 MLPA installed capacity, Birla Opus commands over 21% of the organised industry capacity and holds more than 10% revenue market share in the decorative paints segment.

The brand has demonstrated impressive quarter-on-quarter revenue growth, achieving a high single-digit market share by the fourth quarter of FY25. This growth trajectory indicates its increasing consumer acceptance and market penetration, aided by its robust supply chain and expanding production infrastructure.

Industry Outlook: Growth Driven by Urbanisation and Premiumisation

The Indian decorative paints market is currently estimated at Rs. 72,000 crore, with projected annual growth of approximately 10% over the next decade. Growth drivers include rising urbanisation, increasing housing demand, and a shift towards premium quality paints—a trend that Birla Opus is well-positioned to leverage.

Despite this growth potential, India’s per capita paint consumption remains relatively low at 3.5 kg per annum compared to the global average of 10 kg. This gap presents substantial room for expansion, especially as rising income levels and changing consumer preferences stimulate demand for decorative and protective coatings.

Conclusion

Birla Opus’ rapid capacity augmentation and strategic investments have elevated it to a commanding position in India’s decorative paints sector. Backed by the Aditya Birla Group’s deep industrial expertise and financial muscle, the company is poised to challenge incumbents and capitalize on the sector’s robust growth prospects. As India’s urban and economic landscape evolves, Birla Opus is well placed to ride the wave of premiumisation and increased paint consumption, heralding a new era of competitive dynamism in the decorative paints market.
