Coca-Cola's Strategic Growth in India Boosts Global Volume Amid Mixed Regional Results

By Shilpa Reddy , 1 May 2025

The Coca-Cola Company has reported double-digit volume growth in the Indian market for the March 2025 quarter, driven by its flagship brand Coca-Cola and the iconic local brand Thums Up. This performance contributed to a 2% global unit case volume increase. While India showed strong volume growth, particularly in global and local brands, challenges persisted in the broader non-alcoholic ready-to-drink (NARTD) category. The company also highlighted the success of its historic activation at the Mahakumbh Mela, further solidifying its market presence. Despite these gains, Coca-Cola’s operating revenue in the Asia Pacific region declined slightly, reflecting broader market pressures.

Coca-Cola’s Strong Growth in India: A Bright Spot in a Mixed Global Picture

In a testament to the strength of its product portfolio, The Coca-Cola Company has achieved significant success in the Indian market, with double-digit volume growth in the first quarter of 2025. This positive outcome was largely fueled by the continued popularity of Coca-Cola and Thums Up, the latter being a beloved regional brand in India. Coca-Cola’s global earnings statement highlighted the growth in key markets such as India, China, and Brazil, which collectively contributed to a 2% unit case volume increase globally for the company.

India, now the fifth-largest market for Coca-Cola, demonstrated strong momentum with both global and local brands driving consumption. James Quincey, the Chairman and CEO of The Coca-Cola Company, noted that the volume growth in India reflected an effective combination of global and locally relevant brands. The company’s strategic efforts to penetrate more outlets and expand household reach have paid off, with nearly 350,000 new outlets added and a significant increase in digital customer engagement, including approximately 100,000 new customers on its platforms.

The Mahakumbh Mela: A Landmark Activation for Coca-Cola

In a groundbreaking marketing initiative, Coca-Cola made history during the 2025 Mahakumbh Mela in Prayagraj, India, a festival attracting an estimated 660 million attendees. For the first time, Coca-Cola undertook an integrated brand activation of unprecedented scale, featuring hundreds of refreshment zones, approximately 1,400 mobile stations, and a world-record-long 100 cooler-door wall. The initiative led to over 180 million servings of Coca-Cola products during the event, underscoring the company’s deep commitment to capitalizing on compelling geographic opportunities in emerging markets. This activation strategy reflects Coca-Cola’s ability to integrate its global brand with local consumer engagement in a culturally significant event.

The company’s focus on local-market strategies in India is central to its growth in the Asia Pacific region, which has become a major contributor to Coca-Cola’s global success. Despite challenges in some areas, such as the decline in non-alcoholic ready-to-drink (NARTD) beverages, Coca-Cola’s ability to leverage its regional and local brand strength remains a key driver of growth.

Challenges in NARTD Categories and Regional Performance

While Coca-Cola’s success in the Indian market has been notable, the company did experience challenges within the broader NARTD category. NARTD beverages, which encompass fruit juices, energy drinks, sports beverages, and dairy alternatives, showed a decline in India and other markets, such as Indonesia. As a result, Coca-Cola’s value share in total NARTD beverages remained relatively flat, with gains in the Philippines and Japan being offset by declines in other regions.

Despite this, Coca-Cola’s strategic focus on local relevance and brand strength has allowed it to navigate these headwinds and maintain strong performance in critical markets. The company’s deepened footprint in India through outlet expansion, enhanced cooler placements, and digital platform engagement will likely continue to fuel future growth.

Asia Pacific Results and Regional Headwinds

The company’s performance in the Asia Pacific region, which includes India, showed a 6% increase in unit case volume across all beverage categories. However, Coca-Cola’s net operating revenue in the region declined by 4.05% to USD 1.42 billion for the quarter ending March 28, 2025. Operating income also faced a 5% dip, attributed in part to unfavorable currency impacts and items affecting comparability.

Nonetheless, Coca-Cola remains optimistic about its long-term prospects in Asia Pacific. The company’s currency-neutral operating income, adjusted for non-GAAP items, grew by 7%, driven by organic revenue growth and strategic marketing investments. Coca-Cola’s resilience in the face of regional pressures speaks to its strength in adapting to challenging external environments while staying true to its global business objectives.

Global Outlook and Investor Confidence

On a global scale, Coca-Cola reported a slight decline of 1.5% in consolidated net operating revenue, totaling USD 11.13 billion. James Quincey, commenting on the company’s results, expressed confidence in Coca-Cola’s ability to navigate the complexities of global markets. Despite facing pressure in key developed markets, the company’s extensive global reach has allowed it to achieve a relatively stable performance, particularly in emerging markets like India, which remain crucial for its future growth.

Quincey emphasized that by staying close to consumer needs and remaining committed to its core purpose, Coca-Cola is well-positioned to create enduring long-term value. The company’s diverse global footprint and strong market penetration, especially in developing regions, will continue to fuel its expansion and competitive edge in the global beverage industry.

Conclusion: India Remains a Cornerstone of Coca-Cola’s Strategy

Coca-Cola’s strong performance in India highlights the importance of local market strategies and brand relevance in driving global growth. The company’s success at the Mahakumbh Mela exemplifies its ability to engage with consumers in meaningful ways, further solidifying its market dominance. While facing challenges in certain beverage categories, Coca-Cola’s strategic expansion in India and other emerging markets positions it for continued growth. As the company navigates a complex global landscape, its focus on consumer engagement and market penetration will remain key factors in sustaining its leadership in the beverage industry.
