Domestic Markets Wobble Amid Global Uncertainty and Cautious Sentiment

By Amrita Bhatia , 31 May 2025

Indian equities drifted lower on Friday, reflecting global market jitters and investor caution ahead of crucial domestic economic data. The Sensex retreated 228.39 points to 81,404.63, while the Nifty fell 65.35 points to 24,768.25. Weaker global cues, renewed fears over U.S. trade tariffs, and lackluster performance in auto, metal and IT counters weighed on the mood. Even as institutional flows provided some stability, concerns over tepid corporate earnings relative to macroeconomic strength continued to cap upside potential. With India’s GDP data release imminent, investors remained wary of making bold moves in an increasingly uncertain environment.

Weak Start and Midday Losses

The domestic equity benchmarks opened flat but quickly turned south by midday as sentiment soured further. The Sensex and Nifty both traded in negative territory, reflecting a cautious undertone driven by global developments and uncertainty about India’s economic outlook. Market breadth also painted a cautious picture, with 1,845 stocks declining against 1,436 advancing on the BSE, while 135 remained unchanged.

Global Tariffs and External Pressures

Global sentiment took a hit after a U.S. appeals court on Thursday allowed the President to temporarily continue imposing sweeping tariffs under emergency powers, pending further legal proceedings in a lower trade court. This decision rekindled concerns over escalating trade tensions and their impact on export-driven sectors.

Indian IT stocks, particularly vulnerable to external trade dynamics, bore the brunt of the pressure. Major technology players including TCS, Infosys, and HCL Technologies slipped in early trading. Meanwhile, auto and metal counters also faced selling pressure, further compounding market losses.

Domestic Data Anticipation and Broader Market Dynamics

Adding to the cautious atmosphere, investors awaited the release of India’s GDP figures for the March quarter and provisional numbers for the full fiscal year. With the government expected to unveil the data later in the day, market participants preferred to stay on the sidelines, avoiding significant moves until there was more clarity.

In the broader market, the Nifty Midcap 100 showed resilience, hovering around flat, while the Smallcap 100 index edged down by 0.11 percent, highlighting a mixed performance across different market segments.

Institutional Flows and Underlying Trends

Despite the subdued mood, steady institutional flows from both foreign institutional investors (FIIs) and domestic institutional investors (DIIs) provided a measure of stability. “The ongoing consolidation phase is likely to continue in the near term,” noted V K Vijayakumar, Chief Investment Strategist at Geojit Financial Services. He emphasized that while India’s macroeconomic indicators remain robust, this strength has yet to manifest in corporate earnings, explaining the limited momentum in equity markets.

Global Market Landscape

Asian markets mirrored the bearish sentiment, with key indices including Japan’s Nikkei 225, South Korea’s Kospi, Shanghai Composite and Hong Kong’s Hang Seng slipping into the red. The declines tracked losses in U.S. equity futures, underscoring the interconnectedness of global financial markets and the weight of external factors on domestic sentiment.

Conclusion: Navigating Uncertainty

As Indian investors grapple with a complex mix of global trade concerns and domestic data anticipation, the path forward remains marked by caution and subdued optimism. While institutional flows provide a safety net, the persistent mismatch between economic growth indicators and actual corporate performance may continue to weigh on market direction in the near term. In this landscape, careful stock selection and a focus on long-term fundamentals are likely to be key to navigating the volatility and uncertainty ahead.
