EC Cracks Down: Tarn Taran SSP Suspended for Alleged Meddling in Punjab Bypoll

By Parvati Das , 9 November 2025

In a decisive move aimed at safeguarding electoral integrity, the Election Commission of India has suspended the Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) of Tarn Taran, Punjab, for allegedly interfering in the conduct of a bypoll. The action underscores the Commission’s commitment to ensuring a fair and unbiased democratic process. According to officials, the suspension follows reports suggesting misuse of authority and involvement in activities that could influence the electoral outcome. With political tensions already heightened in Punjab’s volatile border district, the EC’s intervention signals zero tolerance for administrative overreach during elections and reinforces its authority to act swiftly against impropriety.

Election Commission Acts Against Tarn Taran SSP

The Election Commission has suspended the Tarn Taran SSP after receiving credible complaints of interference in the ongoing bypoll process. The officer reportedly engaged in actions that could compromise neutrality, prompting the EC to step in and exercise its constitutional mandate to protect electoral fairness.

Sources indicated that the officer’s conduct did not align with established protocols for law enforcement officials deployed during elections, leading to immediate disciplinary measures.

Upholding Democratic Integrity

The Commission emphasized that maintaining a free and fair electoral environment remains its top priority, particularly in politically sensitive regions like Punjab. Tarn Taran, a border district, has historically required tight oversight due to security concerns and heightened political rivalries.

The EC noted that any administrative or police official attempting to influence voter sentiment or assist political interests will face stern action. The move reflects the institution’s broader strategy of strengthening public trust in the democratic process.

Temporary Replacement and Ongoing Monitoring

Following the suspension, the EC has appointed an interim officer to ensure uninterrupted law and order in the district. The Commission has also directed strict compliance with its directives and increased monitoring of administrative conduct during the poll period.

Officials stated that the suspension serves as a reminder to all personnel on election duty of their obligation to remain impartial and uphold democratic values.

A Message to the Bureaucracy

The EC’s decision is more than a procedural step — it is a symbolic assertion of authority at a time of growing scrutiny over institutional accountability. By acting swiftly, the Commission has reinforced the principle that public office must not be leveraged to influence electoral outcomes, signalling clear repercussions for violations.
