Equity Markets Gain Ground as Budget 2026-27 Approaches

By Tinku Bhatia , 2 February 2026

Indian stock markets moved higher ahead of the Union Budget 2026-27, reflecting cautious optimism among investors as expectations build around policy direction and fiscal priorities. Benchmark indices posted measured gains, supported by selective buying in sectors likely to benefit from government spending and reform continuity. While global cues remained mixed, domestic factors such as resilient economic indicators and stable liquidity conditions lent support to sentiment. Investors, however, remained mindful of potential volatility, aware that budget outcomes can swiftly reshape market expectations. The advance highlights a balancing act between optimism over growth-supportive measures and caution over fiscal constraints.

Pre-Budget Sentiment Turns Positive

Equities edged higher as market participants positioned themselves ahead of Budget Day, betting on policy stability and sustained emphasis on capital expenditure. The rise was incremental rather than broad-based, suggesting that investors favored quality stocks over aggressive risk-taking.

Such pre-budget movements are often driven by expectations, with traders adjusting portfolios in anticipation of potential policy announcements.

Sectoral Cues Reflect Policy Expectations

Infrastructure, capital goods, and select financial stocks attracted buying interest, reflecting hopes of continued public investment and credit growth support. These sectors are widely seen as key beneficiaries of government-led spending initiatives.

In contrast, export-oriented stocks showed muted movement as investors weighed global growth prospects and currency trends.

Domestic Strength Offsets Global Uncertainty

Stable domestic macroeconomic indicators, including strong tax collections and steady consumption, provided a cushion against external uncertainty. Global markets offered mixed signals, with concerns around interest rates and geopolitical developments tempering enthusiasm.

Despite these risks, India’s relative economic resilience helped maintain a constructive tone in equities.

Key Policy Signals Under Watch

Investors are closely tracking signals on the fiscal deficit target, borrowing plans, and tax policy direction. Clarity on medium-term fiscal consolidation and reform momentum is expected to influence market direction well beyond the immediate budget reaction.

Bond yields and currency movements are also likely to respond to the government’s fiscal stance.

Optimism Tempered by Caution

Market strategists caution that pre-budget rallies can be short-lived if expectations are not met. While sentiment has improved, sustained gains will depend on earnings growth and effective policy execution.

As the Union Budget 2026-27 nears, markets remain cautiously optimistic, poised for clarity on the government’s economic roadmap.
