At approximately 9:30 a.m. on Monday, a Mumbai suburban local train traveling from Diva towards Kasara witnessed a horrific accident when at least 10 passengers standing on footboards fell between two trains near the Diva-Kopar section. Four commuters lost their lives, including a 34-year-old railway police officer, Vikky Babasaheb, while two others sustained serious injuries.
The deceased, aged between 23 and 50, were identified as Rahul Gupta (28), Ketan Saroj (23), and Mayur Shah (50). Authorities confirmed the train was severely overcrowded during peak hours, forcing many passengers to travel dangerously on the footboards.
Contributing Factors: Sharp Curve and Close Train Proximity
According to Swapnil Dhanraj Nila, Central Railway’s Chief Public Relations Officer, the accident did not result from a collision but likely occurred due to passengers on footboards of trains moving in opposite directions becoming entangled. The narrow clearance—just 1.5 to 2 meters—between the trains is further reduced on sharp curves where the train tilts, increasing the risk of passengers brushing against each other.
An eyewitness described the spot as “accident-prone,” with frequent passenger falls due to overcrowding and the precarious train alignment on the curve. Despite repeated complaints from commuters, railway authorities had not implemented adequate safety measures prior to the tragedy.
Immediate Emergency Response and Medical Care
The incident was promptly reported by the Train Manager of the Kasara–CSMT local, triggering a swift emergency response. Ambulances and railway medical personnel were dispatched immediately, and the injured were transported to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Hospital in Kalva and Civil Hospital in Thane for urgent treatment.
Central Railway expressed deep sorrow over the fatalities, extending condolences to the bereaved families while affirming that train operations along the affected section continued without disruption.
Railway Ministry Acts to Enhance Passenger Safety
Preliminary investigations indicate that victims were traveling on footboards, an illegal yet common practice due to chronic overcrowding. In response, the Ministry of Railways has mandated that all new suburban train rakes in Mumbai be equipped with automatic door-closure systems to prevent passengers from boarding or standing dangerously on footboards.
Dilip Kumar, Executive Director for Information and Publicity at the Railway Board, announced plans to retrofit all existing local train rakes with similar safety mechanisms. This policy aims to enhance commuter safety by physically restricting access to hazardous areas and reducing the likelihood of accidents caused by overcrowding and unsafe travel practices.
