Finance Minister Sitharaman Calls for Building World-Class Banks to Drive India’s Economic Growth

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has emphasized the urgent need for India to develop world-class banking institutions capable of supporting the nation’s ambitions to become a global economic powerhouse. Addressing industry leaders and financial experts, she underscored that robust, technologically advanced, and well-capitalized banks are vital for sustaining India’s high-growth trajectory. Sitharaman highlighted the role of public and private sector banks in driving inclusive growth, fostering innovation, and financing large-scale infrastructure projects. Her remarks come amid ongoing efforts to strengthen the financial ecosystem through regulatory reforms, digital transformation, and prudent risk management.

Strengthening India’s Financial Architecture

Finance Minister Sitharaman outlined that India’s economic vision for the coming decade hinges on creating globally competitive financial institutions. As the world’s fastest-growing major economy, India requires banks that can handle large credit demands, support capital-intensive industries, and facilitate cross-border trade and investments.

She emphasized that the financial sector must evolve beyond traditional lending practices to embrace innovation, digitization, and sustainability. “If India is to become a developed nation by 2047, our banks must match global standards in governance, efficiency, and scale,” Sitharaman noted.

Her remarks resonate with the government’s broader focus on deepening financial inclusion while simultaneously scaling institutional capacity to manage the growing complexities of the economy.

Digital Transformation and Risk Management

Sitharaman pointed out that digital transformation is reshaping the banking landscape, enabling faster service delivery, greater transparency, and better risk control. She encouraged banks to invest in artificial intelligence, data analytics, and cybersecurity to improve customer experience and operational resilience.

At the same time, she cautioned financial institutions against excessive risk-taking, urging them to maintain strong asset quality and sound lending practices. “Technology must not only enhance efficiency but also strengthen oversight and compliance,” she added.

Her statement comes at a time when Indian banks are witnessing improved profitability and asset quality, aided by a decline in non-performing assets (NPAs) and the resurgence of credit growth across sectors.

Role of Public and Private Sector Banks

The Finance Minister praised public sector banks (PSBs) for their transformation in recent years, following a series of mergers, recapitalizations, and governance reforms. These efforts, she said, have created stronger balance sheets and a more stable banking environment.

However, she also called upon private sector lenders to play a greater role in financing innovation, start-ups, and sustainable development initiatives. Collaboration between public and private institutions, she noted, will be key to ensuring financial stability and broad-based economic growth.

“India’s banking system must be large enough to support trillion-dollar industries and agile enough to serve rural entrepreneurs,” Sitharaman remarked, highlighting the need for scale and inclusivity.

Global Competitiveness and Future Vision

India’s banking system, Sitharaman said, must aspire to match global benchmarks in terms of capital adequacy, digital infrastructure, and governance. She urged banks to expand their global footprint, particularly in emerging markets, while adhering to international best practices in compliance and sustainability.

The Finance Minister reaffirmed the government’s commitment to providing an enabling policy environment that encourages innovation and strengthens investor confidence. Initiatives like GIFT City, the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code (IBC), and fintech regulations were cited as steps toward building a more resilient and transparent financial ecosystem.

Conclusion

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman’s call for world-class banks reflects India’s ambition to elevate its financial sector in line with its global economic aspirations. As the country moves toward becoming a $5 trillion economy, its banks will play a pivotal role in mobilizing capital, funding infrastructure, and fostering inclusive prosperity.

The message is clear: India’s journey toward global leadership will depend not only on economic growth but also on the strength, sophistication, and integrity of its banking institutions.
