Geopolitical Tensions Take Toll on Indian Stock Market, But Experts Forecast Resilience Ahead

By Gurminder Mangat , 12 May 2025

The Indian stock market faced its longest losing streak of 2025, driven by escalating geopolitical tensions between India and Pakistan. The Sensex and Nifty 50 endured substantial volatility, primarily fueled by the ongoing border conflict between the two nations. Despite the turmoil, market experts suggest that the Indian market remains fundamentally strong, with expectations of a recovery in the near future. As investor sentiment stabilizes, key technical levels are set to guide the market’s direction, especially with improving geopolitical conditions.

Geopolitical Strains Weigh on India’s Equity Markets

India’s stock market ended a lengthy streak of gains in 2025, largely due to the sudden flare-up in tensions with Pakistan. The ongoing border conflict, which escalated on Wednesday following India's strike on terrorist camps in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK), has put considerable pressure on investor sentiment. This retaliation came after a deadly terrorist attack in Kashmir, and Pakistan’s counter-response further stoked fears of prolonged instability.

The Sensex and Nifty 50 indices, which are the bellwethers of India’s stock market, saw substantial declines. Volatility increased as the situation worsened, particularly after reports of missile and drone strikes exchanged between the two nuclear-armed neighbors. Investor unease deepened as the Indian Army confirmed multiple overnight attacks from Pakistani forces, adding fuel to concerns about an impending escalation.

Investor Confidence Under Scrutiny Amid Military Tensions

Despite the immediate turmoil, analysts suggest that the market’s response, while negative in the short term, could ultimately be more resilient than feared. Market experts stress that while geopolitical events such as these can cause significant volatility, India’s equity markets are built on strong fundamentals that have withstood similar pressures in the past.

Vaibhav Porwal, co-founder of Dezerv, reassured investors by emphasizing the resilience of the Indian markets, even in the face of heightened tensions. "Investors should zoom out and look at the markets from a broader perspective," Porwal advised. "Well-diversified portfolios will weather this storm."

As such, the market outlook remains cautiously optimistic, with many expecting a rebound once the geopolitical situation stabilizes. Experts also noted that broader market movements, such as the progress of corporate earnings and global economic factors, could offer a counterbalance to local risks.

A Diplomatic Breakthrough Could Restore Investor Confidence

For many, the real turning point in this crisis may lie in the potential for de-escalation. Prashanth Tapsi, AVP of Research at Mehta Equities, sees the possibility of a strategic win for India in its fight against terrorism as a key factor that could lead to an improvement in investor sentiment. The announcement of a ceasefire agreement, he noted, would mark a significant diplomatic victory, removing one of the largest uncertainties hanging over the market.

Tapsi further pointed out that, historically, Indian markets have displayed resilience following periods of geopolitical de-escalation. With a possible ceasefire in place, investor sentiment could improve sharply, providing a much-needed reprieve for the equity indices.

“We expect a positive market reaction to a ceasefire announcement,” said Tapsi. “If stability holds for the next 24 to 48 hours, with no further escalations or hostile rhetoric from either side, markets are likely to respond constructively.”

Navigating Market Volatility: Technical Indicators and Sector Focus

Technical analysis of India’s major equity indices suggests that the market may experience a gap-up opening in the coming days, particularly as investors regain confidence. Tapsi expects the Nifty 50 to open 200-300 points higher, a positive sign for market recovery. However, the ongoing earnings season and global trade uncertainties, including tariff-related issues, could continue to introduce volatility.

Key technical levels are also critical to watch. The Nifty 50's ability to hold above the 24,000 mark remains vital, with 23,500 now emerging as a crucial support level. A breach below this could trigger a fresh wave of selling pressure, with resistance levels at 24,275 and 24,401 providing points to gauge upward momentum.

The defense and banking sectors, which often see renewed interest in times of geopolitical tension, may be among the primary beneficiaries in the coming weeks. As risks related to the India-Pakistan border tensions subside, buying interest in these sectors is expected to pick up. Broader market indices may also recover the losses sustained over the past several trading sessions as sentiment improves.

The Road Ahead: A Look at Investor Behavior and Foreign Flows

Foreign institutional investors (FIIs), who have recently turned net sellers after weeks of sustained buying, will play a key role in the market's short-term direction. Analysts will be keenly watching the behavior of FIIs in the coming sessions, as their investment decisions often serve as an important barometer for broader market sentiment.

As market participants assess the evolving situation, the interplay between domestic and international factors will determine the next phase for Indian equities. For now, investors are urged to remain cautious but optimistic, keeping an eye on both technical indicators and the broader geopolitical landscape.

Conclusion

The Indian stock market's performance this week underscores the impact of geopolitical tensions on investor confidence. However, market experts remain optimistic about the long-term outlook, citing the resilience of India’s equity markets and the potential for a recovery once the current crisis de-escalates. With key technical levels to monitor and a watchful eye on sector performance, investors should prepare for volatility, but with an understanding that India’s markets are well-positioned to weather these challenges.
