Global Pilots’ Body IFALPA Offers Expert Assistance in Air India Crash Probe

In the aftermath of the tragic Air India Flight 171 crash in Ahmedabad, which claimed 241 lives, the International Federation of Air Line Pilots’ Associations (IFALPA) has extended its full technical support to Indian aviation authorities. In a formal communication to the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB), the global pilots’ organization has offered expertise, accredited personnel, and global best practices to assist in the ongoing investigation. Emphasizing the importance of pilot insight in aviation safety, IFALPA aims to collaborate closely with the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) and other stakeholders to prevent future accidents and strengthen procedural safeguards.

IFALPA Responds to Air India Tragedy with Offer of Expertise

The International Federation of Air Line Pilots’ Associations (IFALPA), a prominent global body representing more than 100,000 pilots across 100 countries, has reached out to India’s Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) in the wake of the devastating Air India Flight 171 crash on June 12.

In a letter dated June 17, IFALPA expressed condolences and solidarity with those affected by the tragedy and formally extended technical expertise and investigative personnel to assist Indian authorities in determining the causes of the crash. The flight, operated by a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, crashed shortly after takeoff in Ahmedabad, killing nearly all 241 people onboard.

Formal Letter to AAIB and DGCA

The letter was addressed to AAIB Director General G.V.G. Yugandhar and signed by:

  • Ron Hay, President of IFALPA
  • Jaflar Hassan, Executive Vice-President for Asia-Pacific
  • Sam Thomas, President of ALPA-India

The Federation stated that it is “deeply saddened” by the loss and stands ready to provide expert personnel, technical analysis, and global best practices to support the Indian investigation.

According to the letter, IFALPA emphasized the importance of pilot involvement in accident investigations and pledged collaboration with:

  • The AAIB
  • The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA)
  • Air India

Enhancing the Investigative Process: IFALPA’s Unique Contribution

The Federation underlined the crucial role of accredited pilot investigators, who possess specialized knowledge of:

  • Human factors
  • Aircraft operations
  • Technical systems
  • Pilot decision-making frameworks

IFALPA has developed an internationally recognized accreditation program for such investigators. These professionals are selected based on experience and undergo an internationally approved accident investigation course to qualify. The Federation said these pilots can significantly contribute to analyzing flight data, drafting accurate reports, and formulating actionable safety recommendations.

In accordance with ICAO Annex 13, IFALPA’s member associations in the Indian subcontinent already have such accredited investigators who can be appointed as technical experts in the Air India Flight 171 investigation.

DGCA Surveillance and High-Level Inquiry Underway

The DGCA has responded to the crash by initiating enhanced surveillance of Air India’s entire Boeing 787 fleet, which includes:

  • 26 Boeing 787-8 aircraft
  • 7 Boeing 787-9 aircraft

Simultaneously, a high-level committee, led by the Union Home Secretary, has been constituted to investigate the circumstances surrounding the accident. The committee is expected to submit its report within three months.

IFALPA’s outreach comes at a time when India’s civil aviation sector is under intense scrutiny, and its participation could lend additional depth, neutrality, and technical clarity to the investigative process.

A Call for Transparent and Collaborative Investigation

IFALPA’s letter closed with a request for the AAIB to indicate how the Federation could best support the probe, stating:

“We understand the complexity and sensitivity of this investigation, whose main purpose will be the recovery and analysis of available flight data, the determination of the contributing factors, and most importantly, the prevention of future accidents.”

The Federation reiterated that its goal is to support aviation safety, not to assign blame, and it seeks to foster a collaborative relationship with the investigating agencies.

Conclusion: A Critical Moment for Aviation Safety Governance

As India undertakes one of its most high-profile aviation investigations in recent history, IFALPA’s involvement could serve as a significant asset in ensuring that the process remains technically sound, globally benchmarked, and future-focused.

With its strong emphasis on pilot-driven insights and systemic improvements, IFALPA’s offer underscores the importance of international cooperation in the pursuit of aviation safety and accountability.
