As India prepares for the auspicious occasion of Akshaya Tritiya on April 30, 2025, gold prices have surged to an all-time high, with 10 grams of gold trading at Rs. 1 lakh. Despite the elevated prices, jewellers remain optimistic, anticipating strong consumer demand, particularly for light-weight jewellery. Industry leaders believe that while some hesitation due to price may occur, the cultural significance of the day, combined with gold’s enduring status as a safe-haven investment, will drive sales. Experts predict that the next few days will be crucial in shaping the momentum of gold purchases across India.

Gold Prices Hit Record Highs Ahead of Akshaya Tritiya

As Akshaya Tritiya, one of the most significant days in India for buying gold, draws closer, the market is experiencing a mix of excitement and caution. Gold prices have recently hit unprecedented levels, with the price of 10 grams of gold hovering near Rs. 1 lakh—a record high. The surge in prices, driven by global market dynamics, has made potential buyers more cautious. However, according to industry experts, the festive occasion and the symbolic importance of gold in Indian culture are expected to offset this concern, ensuring continued demand.

The Multi Commodity Exchange (MCX) reported gold prices on April 24, 2025, at Rs. 95,075 per 10 grams. While prices have softened slightly, global gold prices are still high, peaking near the USD 3,330 per ounce on the Comex market. The gold market, which typically experiences heightened activity during Akshaya Tritiya, is bracing for a unique scenario: despite sky-high prices, demand remains robust, especially for smaller, lighter jewellery pieces.

Cultural Significance Drives Consumer Demand

For millions of Indians, Akshaya Tritiya is more than just a day for purchasing precious metals—it's a cultural and spiritual occasion that symbolizes wealth, prosperity, and good fortune. This year, despite gold prices soaring, the allure of this traditional celebration ensures that gold remains a desirable asset. Rajesh Rokde, Chairman of the All India Gem and Jewellery Domestic Council (GJC), highlighted that light-weight jewellery would drive consumer demand. These items cater to diverse budgets, offering consumers a more affordable entry point into gold purchases without compromising the tradition of buying precious metal on the auspicious day.

According to Rokde, while some consumers may exhibit initial hesitation due to the elevated prices, the safe-haven appeal of gold, alongside its cultural significance, will likely translate into a positive sales performance. GJC Vice Chairman Avinash Gupta echoed these sentiments, noting that while volume demand might see a modest decline of up to 10 percent, the market is expected to remain steady.

The Investment Perspective: Gold as a Safe-Haven Asset

Despite price resistance, the sentiment surrounding gold’s role as a safe-haven investment remains unchanged. Sachin Jain, Regional CEO of the World Gold Council (WGC) in India, remarked that gold purchases have consistently been a central aspect of Akshaya Tritiya celebrations. He noted that global gold prices have surged by an impressive 25 percent since January 2025, with prices reaching an all-time high of USD 3,500 per ounce.

This surge in prices, however, has not deterred Indian consumers, who view gold as a long-term asset. Jain further pointed out that gold ETFs, digital gold, and coins have gained popularity as investment avenues, particularly among those looking to hedge against inflation and market volatility.

In addition to this investment-driven demand, seasonal and wedding-related purchases are expected to bolster sales figures, as India’s wedding season coincides with Akshaya Tritiya. The festive occasion thus not only drives cultural consumption but also fuels investment demand, creating a dynamic market environment.

A Unique Set of Market Conditions: Optimism Amidst High Prices

Jewellers across India are gearing up for a favorable buying season despite challenges posed by the soaring prices of gold. Saurabh Gadgil, Chairman and Managing Director of PNG Jewellers, shared that the market is facing a unique set of conditions this year, with prices at an all-time high. However, the consumer sentiment remains strong, and investors continue to view gold as a reliable asset for wealth preservation.

Gadgil remained optimistic about the upcoming Akshaya Tritiya, citing the success seen during the Gudi Padwa festival, where consumer footfall was strong despite rising gold prices. He anticipates a similar trend for Akshaya Tritiya, with a strong turnout expected for both new purchases and deliveries scheduled for the festive day. Additionally, gold bars and coins are expected to perform well as investors seek safe, tangible assets during periods of market uncertainty.

The Future of Gold Consumption in India: Trends and Opportunities

As gold prices continue their upward trajectory, the challenge for the jewellery industry is balancing price sensitivity with the growing consumer preference for affordable, lightweight jewellery. The market for high-value gold—including high-carat jewellery, coins, and gold-backed financial products—is expected to remain strong, particularly among wealthier buyers looking to diversify their investment portfolios.

Jewellery makers are also capitalizing on this trend by offering a range of innovative designs, allowing customers to experience the rich tradition of gold ownership without breaking the bank. This strategy aims to attract a broader demographic, appealing to both the traditional buyer and the modern investor looking for value-for-money pieces.

Conclusion: A Promising Festive Season Despite High Prices

The upcoming Akshaya Tritiya will undoubtedly see robust demand for gold, despite the record-high prices. While some caution is expected, the cultural significance of the occasion and gold’s reputation as a safe-haven asset should propel sales, particularly for lightweight and innovative jewellery pieces. As the Indian economy continues to grow, and consumer awareness about gold-backed investments rises, the role of gold in Indian households remains as strong as ever, ensuring a bright future for the jewellery sector.
