GreenCell Mobility, a sustainable transport company backed by Eversource Capital, has secured key contracts to deploy over 1,200 electric buses across Madhya Pradesh and Andhra Pradesh under the Government of India's PM e-Bus Sewa scheme. The company has partnered with VE Commercial Vehicles and EKA Mobility to support this large-scale initiative aimed at accelerating the electrification of public transportation. With an existing fleet of 900 e-buses operating across several states, this expansion marks a significant step in GreenCell’s mission to advance zero-emission mass mobility in India’s rapidly urbanizing regions.

GreenCell Accelerates EV Public Transit Push

GreenCell Mobility is scaling up its contribution to India’s green transportation revolution by securing Letters of Award for the supply and deployment of 1,222 electric buses under the PM e-Bus Sewa scheme. This development marks a major stride in the government-backed initiative to modernize public transport systems while significantly reducing vehicular emissions in urban areas.

The newly awarded projects cover the deployment of 472 e-buses in Madhya Pradesh and 750 in Andhra Pradesh. These expansions are in line with the Union Government’s national goal of deploying 10,000 electric buses across India, a flagship component of its broader sustainable mobility policy.

Strategic Collaborations with OEMs

To execute these ambitious deployments, GreenCell has partnered with two prominent domestic Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs). VE Commercial Vehicles (VECV) will provide electric buses for six cities in Madhya Pradesh, while EKA Mobility has been engaged for the supply and deployment of 750 e-buses across 11 cities in Andhra Pradesh.

These collaborations leverage both advanced electric vehicle technology and operational expertise, ensuring the buses meet performance, efficiency, and environmental standards. Vinod Aggarwal, MD and CEO of VE Commercial Vehicles, emphasized their role in introducing Eicher electric buses into GreenCell’s growing EV fleet.

Supporting the PM e-Bus Sewa Scheme

The PM e-Bus Sewa initiative, managed by Convergence Energy Services Ltd (CESL), aims to boost zero-emission transportation in cities with over 300,000 residents. For FY 2024–25 alone, CESL floated tenders for 4,588 e-buses, of which GreenCell Mobility has secured a significant share.

With this development, GreenCell strengthens its positioning as a critical partner in the central government’s goal of a clean, efficient, and accessible public transport infrastructure. The expansion also aligns with India’s broader commitments to climate targets under global environmental accords.

Operational Footprint and Infrastructure Investment

GreenCell already operates approximately 900 electric buses in Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat, and Maharashtra. These buses have contributed to substantial emission reductions and provided modernized public transit options to citizens in Tier 1 and Tier 2 cities.

The company is also investing in the necessary ecosystem to support these new e-buses, including state-of-the-art charging infrastructure. By integrating fleet expansion with infrastructure deployment, GreenCell aims to ensure seamless, scalable implementation across its growing portfolio of cities.

Devndra Chawla, Managing Director and CEO of GreenCell Mobility, stated, “These projects represent a critical milestone in our mission to transform India’s mass mobility landscape. Through strategic OEM partnerships and sustainable financing, we are bringing zero-emission mobility to urban populations while supporting national environmental objectives.”

A Blueprint for Future Mobility

As electric vehicle adoption gains traction in the public transport sector, GreenCell’s business model offers a blueprint for scaling e-mobility in emerging markets. The company combines vehicle deployment, infrastructure development, and partnerships with leading automotive and energy players, reflecting a holistic approach to urban mobility.

By pursuing projects that blend environmental stewardship with economic efficiency, GreenCell is helping redefine the future of transportation in India — one electric bus at a time.
