GreenLine Mobility Solutions Ltd., an ambitious venture backed by the Essar group, is making significant strides in transforming India's logistics sector. By securing a substantial USD 275 million equity investment, GreenLine is positioning itself as a leader in decarbonising the heavy trucking industry. This investment will allow the company to deploy over 10,000 LNG and electric-powered trucks and establish 100 LNG refuelling stations and EV charging points across the country. In doing so, GreenLine aims to reduce India's carbon footprint and create a greener future for its road transportation network.
Strategic Investment for Green Mobility
GreenLine Mobility Solutions Ltd. recently announced a groundbreaking investment of USD 275 million aimed at spearheading the decarbonisation of India's logistics sector. This significant funding includes a key USD 20 million contribution from renowned investor Nikhil Kamath. The initiative's core objective is to deploy a fleet of over 10,000 LNG and electric trucks while establishing a robust network of 100 LNG refuelling stations and EV charging points throughout India.
As one of the country's most carbon-intensive industries, the road logistics sector is responsible for nearly 15 percent of India's total carbon emissions. GreenLine's forward-thinking approach seeks to alleviate this issue by transitioning to LNG and EV trucks, which will significantly reduce harmful emissions. By strategically targeting both short-haul and long-haul transportation, GreenLine aims to reduce approximately 1 million tonnes of carbon emissions annually.
Targeting Sustainability through LNG and Electric Vehicles
GreenLine's business model revolves around deploying two types of green vehicles to tackle India's logistical challenges: LNG-powered trucks for long-haul transportation and electric trucks for short-haul operations. These two technologies not only present a cleaner alternative to traditional diesel-powered vehicles but also come at cost parity with diesel trucks, making them an attractive option for businesses.
According to the company's statement, LNG-powered trucks reduce carbon dioxide emissions by as much as 30 percent. This reduction is significant for companies aiming to meet sustainability targets without increasing operational costs. Currently, GreenLine’s fleet of more than 650 LNG trucks is already serving some of the country's largest industries, including FMCG, e-commerce, metals and mining, cement, oil and gas, and chemicals. Over the course of its operations, the fleet has already covered over 38 million kilometers and saved 10,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions.
A Future Driven by Clean Energy
GreenLine’s efforts align with the Indian government's ambitious goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions and creating a more energy-secure nation. The company is also planning to invest in clean energy sources to power its electric trucks in the future, further enhancing the environmental benefits of their green logistics solutions. Anshuman Ruia, Director at Essar, highlighted this commitment to long-term sustainability by emphasizing the importance of building a green mobility ecosystem that not only addresses emissions but also reduces the country’s dependence on energy imports. In addition to the focus on reducing emissions, GreenLine’s investment in the creation of EV charging points and battery swapping stations will significantly improve the operational efficiency and sustainability of its fleet. These infrastructure developments are crucial for the widespread adoption of electric vehicles, as they help mitigate concerns about charging times and range limitations.
Impact on India’s Road Logistics Sector
With over 4 million trucks currently operating in India, the road logistics sector represents a substantial portion of the country’s economy. However, it also remains one of the most environmentally damaging industries. As the sector continues to expand, the urgency of adopting cleaner alternatives becomes increasingly evident. GreenLine is positioning itself as a trailblazer in this transition, offering a practical solution for businesses looking to cut down on their carbon footprint while maintaining operational efficiency. Anand Mimani, CEO of GreenLine Mobility Solutions Ltd., expressed his optimism, stating that the company has made considerable progress since its inception and is now well-equipped to further transform India’s road logistics sector through this fresh infusion of investment.
A Call for Industry-Wide Change
Nikhil Kamath, one of the key investors, also underscored the importance of this shift towards cleaner technology. He emphasized that the logistics industry must evolve in a "faster, cleaner, and smarter" direction. By backing GreenLine, Kamath believes he is supporting a future where sustainability and efficiency are inseparable. His call to action is clear: more companies must embrace green technologies and rethink how goods are moved at scale to meet both environmental and economic demands. The road to a cleaner, more sustainable India may be long, but with companies like GreenLine leading the charge, the shift to greener transportation solutions is already well underway.
