Aditya Birla Capital Reports 30% Dip in Profit Amid Growth in Income and Lending Portfolio

By Vrinda Chaturvedi , 14 May 2025

Aditya Birla Capital, one of India’s prominent non-banking financial companies (NBFCs), saw a notable 30% decline in its consolidated net profit for the quarter ending March 31, 2025. Despite this dip, the company’s total income rose by nearly 13% year-on-year. Additionally, Aditya Birla Capital announced plans to raise significant funds through the issuance of non-convertible debentures (NCDs). In positive developments, the company’s overall lending portfolio and assets under management (AUM) saw strong year-on-year growth, signaling resilience in its business operations. The company’s board has also approved a debt issuance strategy to further strengthen its financial standing.

Aditya Birla Capital Reports Decline in Profit

Aditya Birla Capital has announced a sharp decline in its consolidated net profit for the quarter ending March 31, 2025, posting a figure of Rs. 865 crore. This marks a significant drop of over 30% compared to the net profit of Rs. 1,245.41 crore for the same quarter in the previous fiscal year. Despite the decrease in profitability, the company reported an increase in total income, which rose to Rs. 12,239 crore from Rs. 10,803 crore during the same period last year.

The decline in net profit could be attributed to various factors, including higher operating costs, increased provisions, or changes in the company’s financial structure, which typically impact profitability. However, the income growth points to a more robust revenue generation, especially in the face of challenges.

Fundraising Strategy: Issuance of Debt Securities

To bolster its capital base and strengthen its financial position, Aditya Birla Capital's board has approved a strategic fundraising initiative. The company plans to raise funds through the issuance of debt securities, including non-convertible debentures (NCDs), with an aggregate cap of Rs. 1,65,000 crore. This marks a notable increase from the previous limit of Rs. 1,35,000 crore, and is subject to shareholder approval.

This move reflects the company’s proactive approach to securing liquidity for future growth and expansion. By tapping into the debt market, Aditya Birla Capital seeks to enhance its funding flexibility and continue to support its broad portfolio of businesses, including lending, asset management, and insurance services.

Strong Performance in Lending and Assets Under Management

In terms of operational growth, Aditya Birla Capital’s lending portfolio, which includes both its non-banking financial company (NBFC) and housing finance company (HFC) divisions, showed an impressive 27% year-on-year growth. As of March 31, 2025, the company’s lending portfolio stood at Rs. 1,57,404 crore, demonstrating strong demand for its financial products and services. This growth signifies a healthy expansion in its loan book and positions the company well in India’s competitive financial services market.

Additionally, the company’s assets under management (AUM) across its asset management (AMC), life insurance, and health insurance segments grew by 17%, reaching Rs. 5,11,260 crore. This is a testament to the company’s diversified business model, which continues to perform well across various financial verticals.

Growth in Insurance Premiums

Aditya Birla Capital also reported a solid performance in its insurance business. The total premium collected across life and health insurance segments increased by 22% year-on-year, reaching Rs. 25,579 crore in fiscal year 2024-25. This growth highlights the company's ability to capture a larger share of the insurance market, driven by an expanding customer base and increasing awareness of life and health products in India.

Stock Market Response and Future Outlook

Following the announcement, Aditya Birla Capital's shares remained under pressure, as is typical with such a significant drop in profitability. However, investors appear to be taking a longer-term view, focusing on the company’s growth in income, lending portfolio, and AUM, as well as its proactive approach to fundraising. The strategic debt issuance, if executed successfully, will likely help mitigate the impact of the profit decline and ensure the company remains well-positioned to capitalize on future opportunities.

Looking ahead, the company’s diversified business model, which spans across lending, insurance, and asset management, should provide a cushion against market fluctuations. Furthermore, the company’s strong operational growth in its core segments and its focus on innovation and expansion are likely to drive future value creation for shareholders.

Conclusion

While Aditya Birla Capital's latest quarterly results show a concerning decline in profit, the company’s strategic growth initiatives and healthy operational performance paint an optimistic picture for the future. With strong growth in its lending portfolio, assets under management, and insurance premiums, Aditya Birla Capital is positioning itself to weather market uncertainties. The upcoming debt issuance and the company’s robust financial base suggest that it remains well-equipped to navigate both short-term challenges and long-term opportunities in the ever-evolving financial landscape.
