Foxconn Technology Group, Apple's primary manufacturing partner, faces serious allegations of labor rights violations at its Zhengzhou facility in China. An investigation by China Labor Watch (CLW) has uncovered claims of excessive overtime, wage withholding, and discriminatory hiring practices during the production of Apple's iPhone 17 between March and September 2025. These revelations have raised concerns about the ethical implications of Apple's supply chain practices and the company's commitment to labor rights.

Allegations of Labor Rights Violations

In a move underscoring its long-term commitment to India, Taiwan-based electronics giant Foxconn has appointed Robert Wu as the new head of its India operations. The appointment comes at a time when India is emerging as a key manufacturing hub in Foxconn’s global supply chain, particularly in the electronics and semiconductor sectors. Wu’s leadership is expected to accelerate the company’s investment programs, strengthen local partnerships, and scale up production to meet rising demand from global clients, including Apple.

Apple’s strategy to pivot a significant portion of its iPhone production to India has encountered an unexpected roadblock. Foxconn, Apple’s principal manufacturing partner, has recalled hundreds of Chinese engineers and technicians from its Indian operations. The sudden departure—initiated two months ago—may disrupt knowledge transfer, production training, and manufacturing efficiency at Foxconn’s iPhone facilities in southern India. With Apple aiming to relocate assembly of iPhones sold in the U.S.

Foxconn’s Singapore-based subsidiary has committed to acquiring a significant stake in Yuzhan Technology India, a key player in Apple’s manufacturing ecosystem. The Rs. 127.74 billion ($1.50 billion) deal underscores a strategic pivot to India as a critical manufacturing hub amid rising US-China trade tensions. With Apple expanding production capacity in Tamil Nadu, the move reflects broader efforts to diversify supply chains and mitigate tariff impacts.

Foxconn’s latest facility near Bengaluru is nearing operational readiness, with commercial iPhone shipments from the region expected to commence as early as June. Situated in the Information Technology Investment Region (ITIR) of Devanahalli, the plant underscores India’s rising prominence in global electronics manufacturing amid shifting geopolitical dynamics. With a reported capital investment of Rs. 21,911 crore and government incentives totaling Rs. 6,970 crore, the project is a major milestone for Karnataka’s industrial ambitions.
