IMD Issues Red Alert Across Karnataka: Widespread Rains and High Wind Gusts Forecast Through June 17

By Amrita Bhatia , 13 June 2025

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has reissued a region-wide weather warning for Karnataka, forecasting intense rainfall and strong winds across nearly every district from June 12 to June 17. Following a two-week hiatus in monsoonal activity, the southwest monsoon has reactivated with force. The IMD has issued red alerts in areas like Hubballi in Dharwad district, prompting emergency responses including school closures. With heavy to extremely heavy rainfall and wind speeds ranging from 30 to 60 kmph expected in both coastal and interior Karnataka, authorities are preparing for potential disruptions and urging citizens to remain alert.

Monsoon Returns: IMD Predicts Heavy Showers Across Karnataka

After a brief lull in early June, the southwest monsoon has resumed with renewed vigour, triggering IMD alerts across Karnataka. The weather department has projected “fairly widespread” rainfall across the southern interior districts until June 14, escalating to “widespread” rainfall from June 15 through June 17.

This shift signals a significant uptick in monsoonal momentum, particularly in coastal and northern interior Karnataka, where rainfall intensity is expected to reach hazardous levels.

Regional Alerts: Coastal, Northern and Southern Karnataka on High Vigil

Coastal Karnataka:
Districts including Dakshina Kannada, Uttara Kannada, and Udupi are forecast to receive heavy to very heavy rainfall, accompanied by sustained winds at speeds of 30 to 40 kmph. In some pockets, extremely heavy downpours are likely, increasing the risk of flooding and localized landslides.

Northern Interior Karnataka:
Belagavi, Dharwad, and Gadag are expected to witness heavy to very heavy rainfall, with wind speeds reaching 50 to 60 kmph. Hubballi, in particular, recorded torrential rain on June 12, resulting in severe waterlogging in Hanashi village and surrounding localities. The IMD has issued a red alert for the region. Consequently, the Dharwad district administration has declared a one-day closure of all educational institutions, including anganwadis, primary and high schools, pre-university and degree colleges.

South Interior Karnataka:
Rainfall in districts like Shivamogga, Chikkamagaluru, and Kodagu will intensify from “fairly widespread” to “widespread” as the week progresses. These districts are bracing for extremely heavy rainfall and wind speeds reaching up to 60 kmph. Other areas such as Koppal, Haveri, Bagalkot, Vijayapura, Kalaburagi, and Raichur are expected to receive heavy rain with wind speeds between 40 to 50 kmph.

Urban and Semi-Urban Regions Also Affected

In addition to rural belts, several urban and semi-urban districts are included in the warning:

  • Bengaluru (Urban and Rural), Mysuru, Tumakuru, Davangere, and Mandya may witness heavy rainfall and winds between 40 to 50 kmph at isolated locations.
  • Chamarajanagar, Chitradurga, and Kolar are projected to experience moderate rainfall with similar wind speeds across most areas.

Even districts typically less impacted by monsoon extremes — such as Ballari, Ramanagara, and Hassan — are under advisory for moderate to heavy rainfall.

Emergency Preparedness and Government Response

The IMD’s red alert in certain districts has catalyzed a swift response from local administrative bodies. In Dharwad, Deputy Commissioner Divya Prabhu acted promptly by declaring educational institutions shut for the day, minimizing public exposure during the heaviest downpour.

Disaster management teams across the state are being mobilized, especially in flood-prone zones and low-lying areas. Authorities have urged residents to avoid unnecessary travel, monitor weather updates closely, and take precautions against waterborne diseases and infrastructure hazards.

Economic and Infrastructure Concerns

As the rainfall intensifies, concerns are mounting over potential economic disruption. Karnataka’s agricultural economy, especially in districts like Belagavi and Mandya, could suffer short-term setbacks due to waterlogging and potential crop damage. Urban centres may also face power outages, blocked drainage systems, and delays in transportation logistics, which could ripple into sectors such as retail, manufacturing, and e-commerce distribution.

Given that Karnataka is also a hub for IT and back-office operations, firms may resort to remote working contingencies, especially in Bengaluru and Mysuru, if urban mobility is affected.

Final Word: Navigating the Monsoon Surge

Karnataka’s residents, farmers, business operators, and policymakers are being tested by the monsoon’s early aggression. While rainfall is crucial for the state’s water tables and agricultural vitality, the intensifying pattern of extreme weather events calls for enhanced disaster readiness and long-term urban planning.

With alerts spanning nearly every district, the IMD’s forecast is both a warning and a wake-up call. As the rains pour down, the hope remains that preparation and public awareness will prevent further damage and loss.
