Marico Navigates Input Cost Pressures with Resilient Volume Growth and Strategic Brand Investments

Marico Ltd., a leading player in India’s fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) sector, anticipates modest operating profit growth for the first quarter of FY26, citing inflation in key raw materials like copra and a high comparative base. While easing vegetable oil prices and rangebound crude derivatives provided some relief, the company’s gross margins remain under incremental pressure. Despite this, Marico continues to invest in brand equity and expand its portfolio. Strong rural recovery and improving domestic volumes—particularly in Saffola and Value-Added Hair Oils—contributed to consolidated revenue growth in the low twenties, positioning the company for sustainable, volume-led expansion over the medium term.

Inflationary Pressures and Margin Dynamics

Marico reported a challenging raw material environment in the June 2025 quarter, as sequential inflation in copra—used extensively in hair oil products—continued to weigh on gross margins. Although the government's import duty cut helped reduce vegetable oil prices and crude oil derivatives remained relatively stable, these trends offered only limited reprieve.

Given the high base effect from last year and the pricing-led denominator impact, the company expects a modest increase in operating profit on a year-on-year basis. However, it remains confident that margin pressures will begin to ease in the second half of FY26, aided by more favorable input cost trends.

Demand Revival and Rural Recovery

Amid input headwinds, Marico observed consistent demand patterns across the sector. Particularly encouraging was the recovery in rural markets, which had lagged in previous quarters. Urban demand, meanwhile, remained steady.

The company attributed its resilience to multiple macroeconomic tailwinds, including easing retail inflation, a favorable monsoon outlook, and expected government-led policy stimulus. These factors are likely to bolster consumption and support growth in the coming quarters.

Marico’s strategy of building brand equity and sustaining media investments appears to be yielding returns, especially in rural regions where value-for-money propositions continue to gain traction.

Domestic Business: Strengthening Core and New Franchises

Marico’s domestic operations showed sequential improvement in underlying volume growth, reaching multi-quarter highs. This was led by continued strength in its core brands and the ongoing scale-up of new product categories.

Parachute, the flagship coconut oil brand, saw a marginal volume dip amid hyperinflationary conditions. However, the brand demonstrated pricing inelasticity and strong customer loyalty, absorbing price hikes and grammage reductions with minimal impact on total pack sales. After adjusting for these changes, Parachute maintained its growth trajectory.

Saffola Oils registered a revenue growth in the high twenties, buoyed by mid-single-digit volume growth. The brand continues to benefit from its health-oriented positioning, which resonates with both urban and semi-urban consumers.

Meanwhile, Value Added Hair Oils delivered low double-digit growth, and other emerging categories under the company's innovation pipeline contributed positively to the topline.

International Business Performance

Marico’s international business was another bright spot, posting high-teens growth in constant currency terms. The performance was broad-based, spanning multiple geographies, and underscored the company’s ability to deliver consistent results across diverse operating environments.

The international arm is seen as a critical pillar of Marico’s long-term growth narrative, especially given the maturity of the domestic market. The strong quarterly performance reaffirms the effectiveness of the company’s overseas strategy, which emphasizes portfolio diversification and localization.

Revenue Momentum and Outlook

The company reported consolidated revenue growth in the low twenties on a year-on-year basis, making a strong start toward its full-year goal of achieving double-digit topline expansion. The growth is being driven by a volume-led approach rather than price hikes alone—an encouraging sign for the sustainability of the trend.

Marico reiterated its medium-term aspiration of delivering profitable, volume-driven growth. This approach aligns with evolving consumer preferences for value, quality, and innovation, especially in the post-pandemic FMCG landscape.

Looking ahead, easing input costs, favorable agro-climatic conditions, and macroeconomic stability are expected to enhance profitability and provide tailwinds for further expansion.

Final Thoughts

Marico’s Q1 FY26 operational update reflects a balanced narrative of short-term cost pressures offset by long-term strategic resilience. Despite elevated raw material costs, the company has demonstrated agility in managing margin challenges while continuing to invest in brand strength and innovation. The sequential improvement in volumes and rural recovery bodes well for future quarters, placing Marico in a strong position to deliver on its ambitious growth agenda.

By remaining focused on consumer-centric innovation, prudent cost management, and geographic expansion, Marico is well-positioned to maintain its leadership in the FMCG landscape, both domestically and internationally.
