PM Modi to Inaugurate Namma Metro Yellow Line on August 10; 25-Minute Train Intervals Expected

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to inaugurate the much-anticipated Yellow Line of Bengaluru’s Namma Metro on August 10. Spanning 19.15 kilometers and connecting R.V. Road to Bommasandra, this line aims to significantly reduce commuting time in Bengaluru’s southern corridor. Initially, metro trains will run at a frequency of 25 minutes with six-coach rakes. The line will integrate with existing metro lines and introduce crucial connectivity to major commercial and industrial hubs in the city. With final safety approvals in place, the launch marks a major milestone in Bengaluru’s expanding public transportation network.

Strategic Leap for Bengaluru’s Urban Mobility

The Yellow Line—also known as Reach 5—will provide a much-needed public transport option to some of Bengaluru's most congested areas. Stretching over 19.15 kilometers, the route runs from R.V. Road in the north to Bommasandra in the south. The corridor is particularly significant because it links several important junctions including Jayadeva Hospital, Silk Board, and Electronic City, a hub for IT and manufacturing industries.

The project has been developed by the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL), with train operations managed by Bengaluru-based BEML Limited. Initial services will feature six-coach trains and operate at a frequency of 25 minutes, with a gradual increase in service frequency planned in later phases.

Interconnectivity and First-Mile/Last-Mile Improvements

The Yellow Line is designed to serve as a critical connector within the broader Namma Metro network. It will offer an interchange with the Green Line at R.V. Road station and with the upcoming Blue Line at Central Silk Board. This cross-line connectivity is expected to cut travel time for thousands of daily commuters who currently rely on buses or private vehicles for cross-city movement.

Further enhancing passenger experience, the metro authorities are coordinating with BMTC (Bengaluru Metropolitan Transport Corporation) to provide shuttle services for better first-mile and last-mile access. Parking facilities, feeder buses, and dedicated walkways are also in development to ensure seamless transitions between different modes of transport.

Safety Approvals and Operational Readiness

The Yellow Line recently cleared the final hurdle when it received the mandatory safety certification from the Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety (CMRS). Trial runs have been ongoing since March, during which critical systems—including signaling, braking, and emergency protocols—were rigorously tested.

As per BMRCL officials, the initial operational frequency of 25 minutes will be increased progressively based on commuter response and technical evaluations. Despite the limited frequency at launch, the line is expected to serve more than one lakh passengers daily in its first year.

Economic and Environmental Impact

The launch of the Yellow Line is projected to yield considerable socio-economic benefits. Reduced reliance on personal vehicles will alleviate traffic congestion and lower carbon emissions, contributing to the city’s sustainability goals. Moreover, businesses along the corridor—especially in Electronic City—stand to gain from improved employee mobility and logistics efficiency.

With Bengaluru's urban sprawl intensifying, the metro’s expansion plays a pivotal role in shaping the city’s future infrastructure. The Yellow Line is a significant step toward creating an integrated, sustainable, and reliable public transportation system for one of India’s fastest-growing metropolises.

Conclusion

As Prime Minister Modi prepares to inaugurate the Yellow Line on August 10, Bengaluru edges closer to realizing its vision of a comprehensive metro network. While the initial operations may begin conservatively with a 25-minute frequency, the broader impact of this addition is poised to be transformative—both for daily commuters and the city’s long-term development trajectory.
