Tourism Emerges as Key Driver of India’s Economic Growth: Shekhawat

By Nimrat , 8 September 2025

Tourism has emerged as one of the most dynamic engines of India’s economic progress, according to Union Minister for Tourism Gajendra Singh Shekhawat. Highlighting the sector’s rising contribution to GDP and employment, Shekhawat emphasized that tourism is not only a revenue-generating industry but also a powerful medium of cultural diplomacy and regional development. With government-led initiatives to modernize infrastructure, promote heritage destinations, and streamline policies, India is positioning itself to capitalize on both domestic and international travel demand. Analysts note that the sector holds immense potential to transform local economies while strengthening India’s global image.

Tourism as a Pillar of Economic Growth

Tourism contributes significantly to India’s GDP and employment, with ripple effects extending to allied sectors such as hospitality, transport, aviation, and retail. Shekhawat underscored that investments in tourism infrastructure have a multiplier effect, creating opportunities for small businesses while enhancing livelihoods in rural and semi-urban areas.

The government has increasingly recognized tourism as a strategic sector for inclusive growth, focusing on policies that encourage public-private partnerships and foreign direct investment. This approach aims to position India as a premier global destination for both leisure and business travel.

Infrastructure and Connectivity Push

A central element of the tourism strategy lies in strengthening connectivity. Expansions in aviation routes, modernized railway corridors, and improved road infrastructure are enabling easier access to emerging destinations. Projects under the UDAN regional connectivity scheme have been instrumental in opening up lesser-known locations, encouraging domestic tourism beyond traditional hubs like Goa, Rajasthan, and Kerala.

Simultaneously, investments in digital platforms for booking, ticketing, and guided experiences are fostering seamless travel, in line with global standards.

Heritage, Culture, and Experiential Tourism

India’s rich cultural heritage, coupled with its diverse natural landscapes, provides a competitive edge in the global tourism market. The government has been actively promoting thematic circuits such as spiritual tourism, adventure travel, and eco-tourism to attract a wider demographic of travelers.

Shekhawat noted that international branding campaigns, supported by initiatives like Dekho Apna Desh and Incredible India, are showcasing the country’s unique offerings on a global stage. The promotion of UNESCO World Heritage sites and revival of traditional festivals have further strengthened India’s cultural tourism appeal.

Employment and Local Development

Tourism’s employment potential remains one of its strongest economic arguments. From hotels and restaurants to transport operators and artisans, the sector sustains millions of livelihoods. By directing traffic toward lesser-explored regions, tourism disperses economic benefits more evenly, reducing urban-rural disparities.

Shekhawat stressed that tourism should be viewed as a tool for social empowerment, particularly for women and youth, who form a large part of the workforce in this sector.

Outlook for the Future

As global travel rebounds in the post-pandemic era, India is well-placed to capture a larger share of international tourist arrivals. Strategic investments, coupled with simplified visa norms and digital innovations, are expected to accelerate this growth trajectory.

Analysts believe that if current trends persist, India could position itself among the world’s top tourism economies within the next decade, with the sector serving as both an economic catalyst and a cultural bridge to the world.
