Uber Integrates Metro Ticketing via ONDC, Pioneers Seamless Urban Transit in India

Uber has launched metro ticketing services through its app, in partnership with the Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC), starting with Delhi Metro. This initiative marks Uber’s first integration with India’s Digital Public Infrastructure, enabling users to plan metro journeys, purchase QR-code-based tickets, and access real-time transit updates. The rollout, announced during CEO Dara Khosrowshahi’s visit to India, underscores Uber’s broader commitment to inclusive and multimodal urban mobility. The company also plans to expand this service to three more cities in 2025 and introduce business-to-business (B2B) logistics solutions on the ONDC platform to streamline last-mile delivery services.

Uber Embraces India’s Digital Public Infrastructure

In a strategic move to enhance urban mobility, Uber has integrated Delhi Metro’s ticketing system into its app via the ONDC platform. This development allows users in India’s capital to plan their metro trips, access real-time travel data, and purchase digital QR tickets — all within the Uber ecosystem.

The rollout signifies a landmark collaboration between a global mobility giant and India’s rapidly evolving Digital Public Infrastructure, designed to democratize access to services and foster interoperability across platforms. By tapping into ONDC’s open network, Uber aims to redefine the commuter experience in Indian cities.

From Ride-Hailing to Mobility-as-a-Service

This metro ticketing feature is the first tangible outcome of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed earlier in 2024 during Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi’s visit to India. The agreement laid the groundwork for a strategic partnership with ONDC, aligning with India’s vision of digitally enabled, citizen-centric services.

Praveen Neppalli Naga, Uber’s Chief Technology Officer, emphasized the significance of the integration, stating it brings the company closer to its long-term vision of becoming a "one-stop shop" for mobility. He praised India’s strides in building population-scale digital infrastructure and reiterated Uber’s commitment to innovating within that ecosystem.

Expansion Plans: Three More Cities and B2B Logistics

Uber has also announced plans to scale this metro integration model to three more Indian cities in 2025. Though specific cities have not been named, the move is part of a broader expansion to unify multimodal transport solutions under a single digital interface.

Simultaneously, the company is preparing to launch a new business-to-business logistics solution via ONDC. This feature will enable enterprises to tap into Uber’s delivery fleet without maintaining their own logistics operations, promoting efficiency, cost savings, and supply chain flexibility — especially for small and medium-sized businesses.

ONDC Partnership: A Catalyst for Innovation

The collaboration with ONDC has been welcomed as a milestone in India's digital transformation journey. Vibhor Jain, Acting CEO and COO at ONDC, described Uber’s onboarding as a pivotal advancement in creating interoperable, transparent, and reliable digital commerce pathways.

By facilitating metro ticketing and logistics through ONDC, Uber is not only addressing urban mobility challenges but also contributing to the dismantling of silos in India’s transport and commerce infrastructure. According to Jain, the partnership lays the groundwork for future innovation that could influence mobility, delivery, and service sectors nationwide.

Toward a Seamless, Sustainable Future

Uber’s metro ticketing integration is more than a technological update — it is a symbolic and functional leap toward inclusive, sustainable urban transport. With this move, Uber positions itself at the heart of India’s urban transformation, aligning with national priorities that emphasize digital inclusion, last-mile connectivity, and infrastructure resilience.

As India pushes forward in building a digitized, multimodal transport system, such private-public collaborations offer a blueprint for future mobility solutions — making cities smarter, transport more accessible, and technology truly transformative.
