India Accelerates Green Hydrogen Drive with Rs. 100 Crore Pilot Project Initiative

Union Minister Pralhad Joshi has unveiled a Rs. 100 crore initiative under the National Green Hydrogen Mission (NGHM) to promote pilot projects aimed at advancing indigenous hydrogen technologies. The scheme, which seeks proposals from startups, industry, and research bodies, underscores India’s commitment to achieving its ambitious target of producing 5 million metric tonnes of green hydrogen annually by 2030. By focusing on innovations such as biomass-based hydrogen production, this initiative represents a strategic leap toward sustainable energy security, economic competitiveness, and industrial decarbonization in line with global climate commitments.

A Strategic Step Toward Energy Transition

India’s green hydrogen ambition took a decisive turn this week as Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy, Pralhad Joshi, announced a Rs. 100 crore call for pilot project proposals. The funding aims to accelerate research, testing, and deployment of technologies that can make green hydrogen commercially viable and globally competitive.

The initiative falls under the National Green Hydrogen Mission, a programme with a total outlay of Rs. 19,744 crore, focused on developing the full hydrogen value chain—from production and storage to utilization and export. Joshi emphasized that these pilot projects will serve as a bridge between laboratory research and large-scale industrial deployment, helping India strengthen its technological edge in clean energy manufacturing.

Promoting Innovation Through Pilot Funding

The newly announced scheme seeks innovative solutions in areas such as biomass-to-hydrogen production, waste-to-fuel conversion, advanced electrolysis technologies, and hydrogen-based fuel applications. According to ministry officials, the goal is to reduce dependency on imported technologies and foster indigenous R&D capabilities.

This funding follows an earlier allocation of Rs. 100 crore dedicated to hydrogen-focused startups, reaffirming the government’s multi-pronged strategy to promote innovation through both institutional and entrepreneurial channels. By backing smaller, experimental ventures, the ministry aims to identify scalable technologies that can lower costs and enhance energy efficiency in hydrogen production.

Building the Foundation for Hydrogen Infrastructure

The pilot projects will complement India’s broader push to create a comprehensive green hydrogen ecosystem, encompassing production hubs, storage systems, and fuel distribution networks. Several path-breaking projects are already in motion, including India’s first port-based green hydrogen facility at V.O. Chidambaranar Port in Tamil Nadu, hydrogen-fuelled mobility initiatives, and demonstration projects in the steel sector.

As part of the R&D mission, 23 projects have already been sanctioned to explore multiple facets of the hydrogen economy, such as non-biomass production methods, safety frameworks, and system integration studies. These early-stage projects are expected to yield crucial insights that can inform regulatory frameworks, industrial standards, and commercial strategies for large-scale hydrogen deployment.

Economic and Environmental Impact

The green hydrogen sector presents a twofold opportunity for India: decarbonizing key industries while strengthening its economic resilience through domestic manufacturing. With the global hydrogen economy projected to reach $500 billion by 2050, India’s early investments could secure a significant competitive advantage.

Moreover, hydrogen can play a critical role in reducing emissions from hard-to-abate sectors such as steel, fertilisers, and long-haul transport. It also offers a pathway to transform agricultural waste and biomass into clean fuel—addressing both energy security and environmental waste management.

Minister Joshi highlighted India’s success in achieving one of the lowest global green ammonia discovery prices—Rs. 49.75 per kg—during recent tenders, underscoring the nation’s growing competitiveness in clean fuel markets.

Challenges and the Road Ahead

Despite strong policy support, scaling up remains a formidable challenge. Hydrogen production is still cost-intensive, with electrolyser efficiency, feedstock logistics, and renewable energy integration posing hurdles to commercial feasibility. Experts argue that continuous R&D, domestic manufacturing incentives, and international collaboration will be key to driving down costs and achieving parity with conventional fuels.

As global economies race to decarbonize, India’s pilot-driven approach could serve as a blueprint for innovation-led sustainability—testing technologies locally before replicating them at scale. If executed effectively, the Rs. 100 crore initiative could catalyze a wave of clean-tech entrepreneurship and position India as a global leader in the green hydrogen value chain.

A Defining Moment for India’s Energy Future

The announcement by Pralhad Joshi marks a critical inflection point in India’s transition toward a low-carbon economy. By aligning industrial policy with climate objectives, the government is signalling that green hydrogen is not merely an environmental pursuit—it is an economic strategy for the 21st century.

As pilot projects move from concept to implementation, India’s ability to harness its renewable energy potential, build domestic supply chains, and attract private investment will determine how rapidly it can transform from an energy importer to a clean-energy exporter. The Rs. 100 crore initiative, therefore, is more than just funding—it’s a commitment to redefining India’s energy narrative for a sustainable future.
