India Reaffirms Climate Commitments at CII Summit, Says Yadav

By Nimrat , 4 September 2025

India reiterated its commitment to addressing climate change while ensuring equitable economic growth during the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) summit, Union Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav said. Stressing the principle of “common but differentiated responsibilities,” Yadav emphasized that while India will advance decarbonization, developed nations must step up with greater financing and technology transfers. He highlighted India’s ambitious targets on renewable energy, afforestation, and emissions intensity reduction, positioning the country as a proactive participant in global climate negotiations. His remarks underscored the balance India seeks between sustainability and developmental imperatives.

Climate Commitments and Policy Direction

Yadav outlined India’s updated climate goals, including achieving 50 percent of energy requirements from renewables by 2030, reducing the emissions intensity of GDP by 45 percent, and creating a carbon sink of 2.5–3 billion tonnes through afforestation programs. He emphasized that India is one of the few G20 economies on track to meet its Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) under the Paris Agreement, despite its relatively low historical contribution to global emissions.

Call for Global Equity and Responsibility

The minister stressed that the global climate effort must be rooted in fairness, noting that industrialized nations, responsible for the bulk of historical emissions, bear a larger obligation to fund mitigation and adaptation efforts. Yadav called for enhanced climate finance, estimated in trillions of dollars annually, alongside faster deployment of green technologies. He criticized delays in meeting the $100 billion annual commitment pledged by developed countries and urged greater accountability in global climate governance.

India’s Domestic Efforts

Domestically, India has been scaling up solar, wind, and green hydrogen initiatives while promoting electric mobility and energy efficiency. Yadav highlighted flagship programs such as the National Hydrogen Mission and schemes supporting rooftop solar adoption. He also drew attention to policies incentivizing industries to adopt clean technologies and circular economy practices. These efforts, he said, not only contribute to emissions reduction but also create new opportunities for jobs, investment, and innovation.

Business and Industry Participation

The CII summit brought industry leaders into the conversation, with Yadav urging businesses to align corporate strategies with national sustainability goals. He encouraged investment in green infrastructure, carbon markets, and ESG compliance, describing the private sector as a key driver in India’s transition to a low-carbon economy. Industry representatives echoed the need for clear regulatory frameworks and public-private collaboration to accelerate the green transition.

Balancing Growth and Sustainability

Yadav acknowledged the complexity of balancing climate imperatives with India’s developmental agenda, especially given the need to lift millions out of poverty. However, he argued that climate action and growth are not mutually exclusive. By investing in clean energy, sustainable agriculture, and resilient infrastructure, India can simultaneously strengthen its economy and protect vulnerable communities from climate risks.

Outlook

The minister’s address at the CII summit highlighted India’s dual role: a responsible global player pushing for climate justice and a rapidly developing economy committed to green growth. As negotiations continue in the lead-up to upcoming COP meetings, India’s stance is likely to focus on securing equitable financing, advancing domestic climate action, and shaping the global transition in a way that supports both sustainability and inclusive prosperity.
