Indian Mutual Fund Industry Surges Past Rs. 70 Trillion, Signaling Robust Investor Confidence

By Kirti Srinivasan , 25 May 2025

The Indian mutual fund sector has demonstrated remarkable resilience and expansion, with Assets Under Management (AUM) reaching an unprecedented Rs. 70 trillion as of March 2025—a 22.5% increase year-over-year, according to ICRA Analytics. The surge is propelled predominantly by strong growth in open-ended schemes, especially index funds and ETFs, which expanded by 23.8% in April 2025. Meanwhile, investor participation remains robust with a 30.21% rise in folio count, despite a slight decline in debt-oriented scheme folios. Additionally, equity mutual funds attracted substantial inflows of Rs. 24,269 crore, underpinning sustained investor confidence and a growing appetite for systematic investment plans.

AUM Growth Reflects Strengthening Mutual Fund Industry

The mutual fund landscape in India is witnessing an impressive upswing, underscored by the milestone of Rs. 70 trillion in Assets Under Management as of March 2025. This 22.5% annual increase signals both increased investor trust and expanding capital deployment within the sector. ICRA Analytics attributes this growth largely to the flourishing popularity of open-ended schemes, which offer liquidity and flexibility to investors.

Open-ended index funds and exchange-traded funds (ETFs) emerged as the fastest-growing segments, registering a 23.8% increase in AUM in April 2025 alone. These instruments have gained traction due to their cost efficiency, transparency, and alignment with global market trends, thereby appealing to both retail and institutional investors.

Investor Participation: Folios and Inflows

Investor engagement, as measured by the total number of folios, surged by over 30% to reflect a significant broadening of the investor base. This growth indicates heightened retail participation and suggests that mutual funds continue to serve as an accessible vehicle for wealth creation across demographic segments.

However, it is noteworthy that folio count in debt-oriented schemes declined marginally by 1.15% during the same period. This shift potentially reflects changing risk appetites or a reallocation towards equity-oriented and hybrid funds amid evolving market conditions.

On the inflows front, equity mutual funds drew Rs. 24,269 crore, reinforcing the optimism surrounding the equity asset class. Such substantial capital infusion highlights investors’ increasing confidence in market fundamentals and their willingness to engage in long-term investment horizons.

Systematic Investment Plans Gain Momentum

Systematic Investment Plans (SIPs), a cornerstone of disciplined investing, continue to gain popularity, with the number of outstanding SIP accounts climbing five percent year-on-year to 914.41 lakh as of April 2025. This trend underscores the growing preference for regular, phased investment strategies that mitigate market volatility and foster consistent wealth accumulation.

SIPs are instrumental in widening the investor base and deepening market penetration, as they cater effectively to small and medium-sized investors seeking steady exposure to equity and hybrid funds without committing lump sums.

Outlook for the Indian Mutual Fund Industry

The current trajectory of the mutual fund industry bodes well for sustained growth and deepening market maturity. Increasing financial literacy, evolving regulatory frameworks, and the proliferation of digital platforms are expected to further democratize access and enhance investor experience.

With equity funds and index-linked products leading the charge, the industry is poised to capture greater inflows, thereby contributing meaningfully to India’s capital markets development and overall economic growth.

Conclusion

The Indian mutual fund industry’s leap to Rs. 70 trillion in AUM is a testament to its dynamic evolution and robust investor confidence. Bolstered by strong inflows, expanding folio counts, and rising SIP participation, the sector is on a firm growth path. As market dynamics continue to evolve, mutual funds stand ready to play a pivotal role in India’s wealth creation narrative, offering diversified, accessible investment avenues to a growing base of investors.
