Indian travelers are making more informed and experience-driven decisions than ever, with digital platforms playing a pivotal role in shaping travel choices, according to the 2025 Global Travel Trends Report by American Express India. The study, surveying 1,023 Indian adults, reveals that 67% of travelers rely on online reviews, while over half turn to recommendations from family and friends. Travel apps are also gaining popularity, and sporting events are emerging as a compelling reason to explore both domestic and international destinations. The findings underscore a broader shift toward purposeful travel, digital integration, and personalized experiences.

Digital Influence on Travel Decisions

The survey highlights the growing digital dependency among Indian travelers. A significant 67% of respondents cited travel review websites as their primary source of information when choosing international destinations. These platforms, which offer detailed user feedback, ratings, and real-time insights, are increasingly shaping the decision-making process, replacing traditional travel agencies and brochures.

Equally notable is the role of peer influence—51% of travelers reported relying on personal recommendations from friends and family. This emphasizes the importance of trust and firsthand experiences in determining where to go and what to explore.

Rise of Travel Apps: Tech-Savvy Travel Planning

The data suggests that a growing number of Indian travelers are embracing technology to streamline their journeys. Approximately one-third of respondents indicated they download travel-related apps prior to departure. These tools, which range from itinerary planners and digital maps to translation services and currency converters, are becoming essential companions.

This behavioral trend reflects India's deepening smartphone penetration and a shift toward self-reliant, digitally organized travel. It also presents a strategic opportunity for travel brands and tech firms to enhance customer engagement through intuitive app experiences.

Experience-Driven Travel: The Sporting Spirit

The desire for experiential travel continues to grow. According to the report, 36% of Indian travelers are willing to travel domestically, and 32% internationally, specifically to attend sporting events in 2025.

Cricket dominates this trend, with 63% of respondents expressing interest in traveling for matches, followed by football/soccer at 38%. This highlights how sporting events are no longer just spectator opportunities—they are cultural experiences motivating travel across borders.

As global sporting calendars expand, this demand may open lucrative avenues for tour operators, airlines, and hospitality brands seeking to package sports tourism offerings.

The Indian Traveler: Informed, Discerning, and Value-Focused

According to Sanjay Khanna, CEO and Country Manager at American Express Banking Corp India, today’s Indian traveler is "more informed and discerning than ever before." This generation of globetrotters seeks holistic experiences that blend leisure, discovery, and value.

American Express is aligning its offerings with these expectations, aiming to enhance every phase of the travel journey—from planning to payment, and from shopping to entertainment. The emphasis is on delivering customized value, particularly to Card Members, who prioritize seamless and rewarding travel experiences.

Conclusion: The Future of Indian Travel is Digital and Experiential

The 2025 Global Travel Trends Report paints a clear picture: Indian travelers are evolving rapidly, guided by a blend of digital empowerment and desire for meaningful engagement. Whether through app-based planning, online reviews, or sports-centric itineraries, the journey is becoming as important as the destination.

For businesses in the travel, fintech, and hospitality sectors, understanding these preferences will be critical in capturing market share and crafting future-ready strategies. As India continues to emerge as a key source market for global tourism, one thing is evident—the traveler of tomorrow is already here, and they are traveling smarter.
