India’s August Inflation Eases Marginally, Food Prices Remain Key Risk

By Shilpa Reddy , 15 September 2025

India’s retail inflation in August moderated slightly from July’s levels, offering a degree of relief to policymakers and consumers. While headline inflation edged lower, food prices—particularly vegetables and pulses—remained elevated, keeping pressure on household budgets. Core inflation continued its softening trend, reflecting stability in non-food categories such as housing, clothing, and services. Economists believe the latest reading keeps the Reserve Bank of India’s monetary stance on hold, though volatility in food prices and global crude oil costs could still challenge the disinflationary trajectory in the coming months.

Headline Inflation Shows a Modest Decline

The Consumer Price Index (CPI) for August eased marginally, coming in below July’s reading but still above the RBI’s medium-term target of 4 percent. Analysts attributed the moderation to easing supply pressures in certain perishable categories, alongside favorable base effects. However, the overall index underscored the persistence of price stress in daily essentials, highlighting the uneven nature of India’s disinflationary journey.

Food Inflation Remains the Dominant Concern

Food inflation once again proved the largest contributor to price pressures. Vegetables, cereals, and pulses recorded significant year-on-year gains, though the pace of price increases slowed slightly compared with the previous month. Seasonal patterns, erratic rainfall, and supply chain bottlenecks added to volatility. While the government has announced measures such as buffer stock releases and import facilitation to rein in prices, economists caution that food inflation will remain a wildcard in the coming months, particularly ahead of the festive season.

Core Inflation Offers Policy Comfort

Core inflation, which excludes food and fuel, continued to cool, registering its lowest level in several years. Price stability in housing, clothing, transport, and services provided a cushion against volatile food categories. The steady decline in core inflation supports the view that demand-side pressures remain contained, giving the central bank room to maintain its focus on anchoring inflation expectations without resorting to aggressive policy tightening.

Implications for Monetary Policy

The RBI is likely to keep its policy rate unchanged in the near term, balancing the need for price stability with the imperative to support growth. The central bank has repeatedly stressed that the path toward achieving the 4 percent target will be “gradual and uneven,” and August’s data reinforces that assessment. Analysts believe the RBI will continue to rely on supply-side interventions and liquidity management rather than immediate rate changes, especially as global uncertainties—ranging from oil price fluctuations to monetary tightening in advanced economies—remain in play.

Outlook: Inflation Risks Tilted to the Upside

Although headline inflation is showing signs of easing, risks remain tilted upward. Erratic monsoon patterns, global energy prices, and geopolitical disruptions could stoke fresh price pressures in the second half of the fiscal year. For households, elevated food prices continue to strain consumption patterns, particularly in rural India. For policymakers, the challenge lies in balancing inflation management with the need to sustain growth momentum as domestic demand recovers.
