India’s Auto Sector Posts Modest Growth in May Amid Mixed Segment Performance

By Nimrat , 16 June 2025

India’s automobile sector witnessed a tepid recovery in May, with total vehicle wholesales inching up by 1.8% year-on-year, according to the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM). While two-wheelers recorded a modest uptick in dispatches, passenger vehicle (PV) sales declined slightly by 0.8%, and the three-wheeler segment fell by 3.3%. The mixed performance reflects the sector’s ongoing struggle to stabilize amid evolving demand dynamics and fluctuating consumer sentiment. Despite these segmental disparities, the overall trend suggests a cautious but forward-moving trajectory for the domestic auto industry.

Passenger Vehicles See Marginal Dip

India’s passenger vehicle market recorded a slight contraction in wholesale volumes in May 2025, with total dispatches reaching 3,44,656 units—down 0.8% from 3,47,492 units in the same month last year. This decline highlights the industry's ongoing sensitivity to macroeconomic variables such as fuel prices, interest rates, and consumer sentiment.

While the drop was marginal, it points to a potential plateauing in demand after strong performances in previous quarters. Automakers may need to recalibrate their strategies, focusing on new launches, promotional campaigns, and the transition to electric and hybrid models to regain momentum.

Two-Wheelers Register Modest Growth

The two-wheeler segment, a key barometer of rural and urban mobility trends, posted a year-on-year growth of 2.2%. Wholesale dispatches rose to 16,55,927 units in May 2025, up from 16,20,084 units during the same period last year.

This increase suggests a gradual recovery in demand, possibly fueled by improved rural income conditions, seasonal mobility needs, and the growing popularity of entry-level motorcycles and scooters. However, the growth remains modest and signals that the market has yet to return to its pre-pandemic trajectory.

Three-Wheelers Face Pressure

In contrast to two-wheelers, the three-wheeler category experienced a contraction of 3.3%, with May sales declining to 53,942 units from 55,763 units in the previous year. This dip could be attributed to uneven demand in urban and semi-urban transport segments, regulatory shifts, or inventory adjustments by dealers.

Three-wheelers, which serve as essential last-mile transport vehicles in many parts of India, are also facing rising competition from electric variants. The transition toward cleaner mobility solutions could be both a challenge and an opportunity for legacy manufacturers in this space.

Overall Vehicle Sales Reflect Measured Optimism

Despite the divergent trends across individual vehicle categories, the Indian auto industry reported an overall increase in wholesales. Total dispatches across all segments stood at 20,12,969 units in May, a 1.8% rise over the 19,76,674 units recorded in the corresponding month last year.

This modest increase points to a cautiously optimistic outlook, as the sector navigates through a patchy recovery, inventory normalization, and a pivot toward electrification and digital transformation.

Conclusion: Navigating a Nuanced Recovery

The latest figures from SIAM reflect the complex and evolving landscape of India’s automotive sector. While aggregate numbers point toward mild growth, the divergence in segment performance underscores the importance of agile market strategies and policy support.

With rising fuel costs, a strengthening EV ecosystem, and changing consumer preferences, stakeholders must remain focused on innovation, supply chain resilience, and affordability to ensure long-term, sustainable growth across all vehicle categories.
