India’s Business Confidence Climbs Sharply in Q1 FY26, Says NCAER

By Amrita Bhatia , 8 August 2025

India’s business sentiment saw a notable upswing in the April–June quarter of FY26, signaling optimism across sectors despite global economic headwinds. The National Council of Applied Economic Research (NCAER) reported a significant rise in its Business Confidence Index (BCI), reflecting improved perceptions around financial positions, demand outlook, and macroeconomic stability. The upward trajectory in confidence comes amid robust domestic consumption, moderating inflation, and steady investment activity. Businesses appear buoyed by a combination of policy continuity, resilient corporate performance, and a stabilizing external environment. However, cautious optimism remains, with sectors still tracking geopolitical developments and commodity volatility closely.

Index Rebounds to Pre-Pandemic Levels

According to NCAER’s latest findings, the Business Confidence Index jumped by 16.2% sequentially in Q1 FY26 compared to the preceding quarter, with nearly 70% of respondents indicating improved expectations for the near-term business environment. This marks one of the most significant quarterly gains since the pre-COVID period, and suggests that business sentiment has not only recovered from pandemic-era lows but is now entering an expansionary phase.

Respondents across manufacturing, services, and infrastructure sectors cited improved revenue visibility, higher capacity utilization, and robust demand conditions as primary drivers of the positive sentiment.

Key Drivers of Improved Sentiment

Several macroeconomic indicators contributed to the rebound in confidence. The moderation in retail inflation, which hovered close to the Reserve Bank of India’s target range, along with a stable interest rate environment, created fertile ground for business expansion. Additionally, strong GST collections and continued public infrastructure spending bolstered outlooks, particularly in construction and logistics.

Private consumption remained resilient in urban centers, while rural demand showed early signs of revival, helped by higher government support and steady agricultural output projections.

Moreover, businesses are optimistic about policy stability following the general elections, anticipating regulatory continuity and a renewed thrust on ease-of-doing-business reforms.

Sectoral Insights and Outlook

The services sector, particularly hospitality, IT, and retail, exhibited a strong rebound in confidence, driven by rising consumer spending and favorable seasonal trends. Manufacturing, though slightly cautious on exports due to a tepid global trade environment, reported improving domestic orders and investment momentum.

The construction and infrastructure segments benefitted from government-led capital expenditure initiatives, which are expected to continue underpinning demand for cement, steel, and labor-intensive services.

However, the export-oriented sectors such as textiles and chemicals remained subdued, with global demand weakness and shipping disruptions dampening confidence. Still, companies in these sectors expressed guarded optimism for H2 FY26, banking on expected global recovery.

Challenges and Cautionary Signals

Despite the overall uptick, businesses remain wary of a few critical headwinds. Persistent geopolitical tensions, particularly in key energy-producing regions, continue to influence commodity prices, especially crude oil. A sharp rise in input costs could pressure operating margins in the near term.

Currency volatility, driven by global capital flows and central bank actions in advanced economies, also remains a concern for companies with foreign exposure.

Moreover, while the RBI has maintained a balanced monetary stance, firms are closely watching liquidity trends and potential regulatory shifts that could affect credit availability, especially for MSMEs.

---

Policy Implications and Strategic Outlook

The sharp rise in business confidence could influence policymaking by reinforcing the case for growth-supportive measures. Continued fiscal discipline, targeted subsidies, and acceleration of key structural reforms may further improve investor sentiment and corporate investment appetite.

The private sector is likely to ramp up capital spending if the current optimism is sustained through the festive season. Sectors like renewable energy, EVs, digital infrastructure, and real estate are expected to lead this charge.

Investors, both domestic and international, are likely to view the rising confidence index as a bullish signal, particularly in the context of India’s relative macroeconomic stability and reform-oriented governance.

Conclusion

India’s business climate is showing robust signs of revival, as captured by the significant rise in NCAER’s Business Confidence Index for Q1 FY26. While global uncertainties persist, domestic economic fundamentals appear strong enough to support continued expansion. With favorable policy signals, strong consumer demand, and a resilient corporate sector, India may be poised for a sustained economic upswing—provided businesses navigate short-term external risks with prudence and agility.
