India’s construction equipment sector is poised for a return to double-digit growth in FY26, bolstered by accelerating infrastructure development, improving project execution, and robust export performance. After a modest 3% expansion in FY25, the Indian Construction Equipment Manufacturers' Association (ICEMA) projects at least 10% growth for the current fiscal year, projecting the industry’s value to exceed USD 11 billion (approximately Rs. 91,000 crore). With India solidifying its position as the world’s third-largest construction equipment market, future growth will hinge on government support, financing accessibility, and policy reforms to sustain momentum in both domestic and global markets.
Rebounding with Resilience
Following a relatively subdued performance in FY25, where total equipment sales inched up 3% year-on-year to 1,40,191 units from 1,35,650 units, India’s construction equipment industry is optimistic about a significant rebound in the current fiscal. According to ICEMA President V. Vivekanand, the industry is targeting a minimum 10% growth rate in FY26, driven by an uptick in project execution and post-election infrastructure activity.
This forecast suggests that the sector, currently valued at USD 10 billion (approximately Rs. 83,000 crore), could cross the USD 11 billion mark in the next financial year.
Exports Propel Industry Forward
While domestic market growth in FY25 remained tepid at 2.7%, a notable 10% surge in exports injected vitality into the sector, showcasing the competitiveness of Indian-manufactured machinery on the global stage. This uptick was especially meaningful amid election-period disruptions that constrained local demand.
"The export momentum validates the international confidence in India’s manufacturing capabilities," Vivekanand stated. "It not only offset domestic challenges but also cemented India's standing as the third-largest market globally for construction equipment."
Market Segmentation: Earthmoving Leads the Pack
Earthmoving machinery maintained its dominance, capturing 71% of total market share with 99,159 units sold and a 6% year-on-year increase. Backhoe loaders led this segment, recording 53,133 units (54% of earthmoving sales), followed by crawler excavators at 35,816 units (36%).
Other segments also posted steady performance:
- Material Handling Equipment: 17,050 units
- Concrete Equipment: 14,473 units, registering 3% growth
- Road Construction Equipment: 7,002 units
- Material Processing Equipment: 2,507 units
The distribution underscores a balanced demand across infrastructure verticals, reinforcing confidence in long-term sectoral growth.
Path to Future Growth: Challenges and Requirements
While industry fundamentals remain strong, stakeholders stress the need for strategic policy support to unlock the sector’s full potential. ICEMA has emphasized the importance of:
- Enhanced access to financing for equipment procurement
- Streamlined regulations to accelerate project timelines
- Supply chain optimization to mitigate input cost volatility
A forward-looking policy framework, aligned with India’s infrastructure vision, will be essential to sustain the growth trajectory and enable Indian manufacturers to meet rising global demand.
Conclusion
India’s construction equipment industry is entering FY26 with renewed optimism and a clear growth roadmap. Buoyed by a resilient export base and expanding domestic opportunities, the sector is well-positioned to exceed Rs. 91,000 crore in value. However, achieving this milestone will depend on the timely convergence of policy, investment, and innovation. As India builds for the future, its machinery manufacturers are ready to provide the steel and muscle to shape the nation's next chapter.
