India's energy storage sector is set to witness significant growth, with projections indicating a Rs 4.79 lakh crore investment by 2032. According to the India Energy Storage Alliance (IESA), the sector will expand five-fold between 2026 and 2032, driven by increased demand for energy storage systems (ESS) in response to the nation’s rising renewable energy capacity. The National Electricity Plan (NEP) anticipates a substantial increase in storage requirements, with both pumped storage and battery energy storage systems playing crucial roles. Industry leaders and government officials highlight the sector’s potential for innovation, investment, and infrastructure development.

At the 5th Edition of the International Conference on Stationary Energy Storage India (SESI) 2025 in Gandhinagar, Gujarat, Vinayak Walimbe, Managing Director of IESA's parent body Customised Energy Solutions (CES), emphasized that the strategic investment required to advance technological innovations and strengthen India’s energy storage ecosystem is crucial to meeting future energy demands.

India is currently undergoing a significant energy transformation, transitioning towards more sustainable energy solutions. With renewable energy taking a larger share of the energy mix, the need for energy storage solutions that can stabilize supply and demand is more pressing than ever.

 

The Role of Energy Storage in India’s Renewable Energy Push

India’s ambitious renewable energy targets are set to drive the demand for energy storage systems (ESS) across the country. According to the National Electricity Plan (NEP), by 2026-27, India will require 16.13 GW of energy storage capacity, which includes both pumped storage (PSP) and battery energy storage systems (BESS). These projections will only increase by 2031-32, when the country will need 73.93 GW of storage capacity to meet its growing energy demands.

Arun Mahesh Babu, Managing Director of Gujarat Power Corporation, highlighted that Gujarat currently contributes over 30 GW of renewable energy and aims to reach 100 GW by 2030. This ambitious renewable energy expansion will require an equally robust energy storage infrastructure to ensure grid stability and reliable energy delivery. As Gujarat leads the charge in renewable energy generation, other states are expected to follow suit, further driving the growth of the energy storage sector.

 

Investment Opportunities and Technological Advancements

The projected growth of the energy storage market presents lucrative opportunities for investors and innovators alike. According to RP Gupta, Chairman and Managing Director of the Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI), the country aims for approximately 500 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of energy storage by 2030, with the long-term goal of 5,000 GWh by 2047. This vision underscores the immense potential for energy storage to become a critical enabler of India’s renewable energy strategy.

One of the key factors driving the sector’s expansion is the significant reduction in the cost of energy storage systems. Over the past 2 to 2.5 years, the cost of energy storage has dropped from Rs 10 lakh per megawatt per month to approximately Rs 2.5 lakh per megawatt, making energy storage a more affordable and viable option for large-scale implementation.

Additionally, Ghanshyam Prasad, Chairperson of the Central Electricity Authority of India (CEA), noted that new standards for battery energy storage will soon be released, providing greater clarity and transparency for both storage suppliers and users. This regulatory framework will help streamline the growth of the sector by ensuring consistency and reliability across the energy storage industry.

The growth of India’s energy storage sector is being supported by a wide range of stakeholders, including government agencies, industry bodies, and private sector players. The IESA, which has been a driving force behind the development of advanced energy storage, e-mobility, and green hydrogen technologies, plays a central role in shaping the sector’s future.

Over 200 industry leaders, government officials, and partners participated in the SESI 2025 conference, discussing key topics such as government policies, tender analyses, and the latest developments in energy storage projects. This collaboration between public and private sector entities is essential to driving technological advancements and securing the investments needed to meet India’s ambitious energy storage goals.

Major contributors to the sector’s development include the Government of Gujarat, the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE), the Central Electricity Authority (CEA), SECI, NTPC, Adani New Industries, and JSW Energy. Their combined efforts are set to transform India into a global leader in energy storage innovation and infrastructure.
