India’s First Homegrown Semiconductor Chip to Launch This Year, Heralding a New Era for Technology Manufacturing

India is set to make a major breakthrough in technology manufacturing with the launch of its first indigenously developed semiconductor chip, ranging between 28 to 90 nanometres, this year. Union Minister for Electronics and IT, Ashwini Vaishnaw, shared the milestone at the Confederation of Indian Industry’s Annual Business Summit, underlining the government’s strategic approach and focus on high-demand market segments. This development marks a significant step in India’s journey toward self-reliance in critical technologies and coincides with advancements in the railway sector and artificial intelligence initiatives tailored for India’s unique needs.

A Landmark Milestone in Semiconductor Manufacturing

India’s technology sector is poised for a major leap forward with the anticipated launch of its first domestically produced semiconductor chip. Union Minister for Electronics and IT, Ashwini Vaishnaw, confirmed the development at the Confederation of Indian Industry’s (CII) Annual Business Summit, stating that the country’s semiconductor manufacturing journey, initiated in 2022, has made substantial progress.

This homegrown chip, with features spanning from 28 to 90 nanometres, is positioned to meet 60 percent of global semiconductor demand, reflecting India’s strategic alignment with international market needs.

Powering Critical Sectors

Chips in the 28-90 nm range are widely used in automotive electronics, telecommunications infrastructure, power management equipment, and railway systems. In semiconductor design, a smaller nanometre value typically means higher transistor density, leading to improved performance and greater energy efficiency.

Vaishnaw emphasized that India’s semiconductor initiative targets these essential applications, ensuring that the domestic manufacturing base directly addresses critical technological needs across industries.

Balancing Manufacturing and Services for Economic Growth

The minister highlighted the need for a dual focus on both manufacturing and services to ensure sustainable economic growth. While the services sector continues to play a significant role in India’s economy, Vaishnaw underscored the urgency of developing manufacturing capabilities alongside.

“India’s future depends on our ability to create intellectual property, products, designs, and standards,” he stated, calling for a renewed emphasis on manufacturing to complement the booming services sector.

AI as a Catalyst for Transformation

Vaishnaw also spoke about the transformative potential of artificial intelligence, comparing its impact to the revolutionary role of the internet. AI’s ability to reshape industries and redefine professional roles demands a comprehensive, inclusive approach, he said.

Recognizing India’s diverse cultural and linguistic landscape, the minister introduced Sarvam, an India-centric AI model. Sarvam aims to ensure AI tools are developed in harmony with India’s unique social and cultural context, underscoring the government’s vision for inclusive digital growth.

Transformative Growth in Railways

In addition to his IT responsibilities, Vaishnaw addressed significant progress within the railway sector. India now boasts the world’s second-largest freight railway network, surpassing both the United States and Russia by transporting 1,612 million tonnes of cargo. Passenger traffic has also grown substantially, marking a new chapter for the sector.

The minister highlighted the successful integration of startups into the railway ecosystem, driven by a government-backed policy that supports the testing and scaling of new ideas. This initiative aims to foster innovation and elevate performance standards within the sector.
