India’s Tablet Market Shows Resilience Amid Shifting Consumer Demand

By Amrita Bhatia , 1 September 2025

India’s tablet market has experienced notable shifts in recent quarters, reflecting evolving consumer preferences, supply chain challenges, and heightened competition among global and domestic players. While the segment witnessed a temporary slowdown following the pandemic-driven boom, demand is showing signs of stabilizing, driven by education, enterprise adoption, and hybrid work trends. Analysts believe affordability, connectivity, and integration with digital services will determine the sector’s growth trajectory, as companies recalibrate strategies to tap into both urban and rural markets.

Pandemic Boom and Post-Pandemic Adjustment

The COVID-19 pandemic triggered unprecedented demand for tablets in India as households sought devices for online learning, work-from-home setups, and entertainment. This led to record shipments in 2020 and 2021. However, as offices and schools reopened, the category faced a correction. Recent data suggests that while overall shipment volumes have softened compared with the peak years, the market is settling into a sustainable rhythm rather than collapsing entirely.

Drivers of Current Demand

Today’s growth is fueled primarily by three key factors:

Education: Schools and universities continue to rely on digital tools, particularly in semi-urban and rural regions where tablets serve as cost-effective learning devices.

Enterprise Adoption: Corporations are deploying tablets for fieldwork, logistics, and customer-facing functions, favoring devices with robust connectivity and security features.

Hybrid Lifestyles: With work and learning increasingly blending with personal life, consumers are seeking multipurpose devices that bridge productivity and entertainment.

Competitive Landscape

Samsung, Apple, and Lenovo dominate the Indian tablet market, together accounting for the lion’s share of shipments. Samsung leads in the Android space with a diverse portfolio across price segments, while Apple remains the aspirational choice with its iPad lineup. Lenovo has carved a niche through competitively priced models targeting the education sector. Meanwhile, Indian brands and Chinese entrants are leveraging affordability to capture first-time buyers, intensifying competition in the sub-Rs. 20,000 category.

Pricing and Affordability Trends

The most competitive segment remains tablets priced between Rs. 10,000 and Rs. 20,000, where value-conscious consumers demand reliable performance without premium pricing. At the higher end, devices above Rs. 40,000 are witnessing steady demand from professionals, creative users, and affluent families. Analysts note that manufacturers are increasingly bundling offers such as styluses, detachable keyboards, and financing options to make devices more appealing.

The 5G Factor and Future Outlook

The rollout of 5G in India is expected to provide a strong push for the tablet market, particularly for premium devices that leverage high-speed connectivity for streaming, gaming, and enterprise applications. Coupled with government initiatives promoting digital education, the sector is likely to sustain mid-to-high single-digit growth in the coming years. However, challenges such as component costs, global supply disruptions, and fluctuating consumer spending power remain critical variables.

Outlook

India’s tablet market is transitioning from a pandemic-driven surge to a more balanced, long-term growth path. With education, enterprise, and hybrid use cases fueling steady demand, manufacturers are recalibrating strategies to align with shifting consumer expectations. As affordability, 5G adoption, and ecosystem integration take center stage, the Indian market will remain a key battleground for global and domestic players vying to secure a foothold in one of the fastest-growing digital economies in the world.
