Jet Fuel Prices Rise 3% While Domestic LPG Becomes Cheaper: Mixed Signals for Consumers and Industry

By Shilpa Reddy , 3 August 2025

In a dual adjustment of energy pricing, aviation turbine fuel (ATF) rates were increased by 3% while domestic liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) prices were reduced. The move reflects global oil market fluctuations and local pricing recalibrations tied to currency movements and refined product demand. The hike in jet fuel prices may intensify cost pressures on airlines already navigating a fragile demand environment, whereas the LPG price cut offers marginal relief to households. Together, these shifts signal the government’s ongoing attempt to balance consumer welfare with fiscal prudence amid volatile energy markets.

Jet Fuel Becomes Costlier for Airlines

Aviation turbine fuel (ATF) prices were raised by approximately 3%, translating to an increase of Rs. 3,146.25 per kiloliter. The revised price now stands at Rs. 1,01,598.26 per kiloliter in the Delhi market. The adjustment follows a steady uptick in international crude oil prices and higher refining margins globally.

This marks the second consecutive monthly increase in jet fuel costs, further tightening margins for Indian airlines that continue to grapple with elevated operational expenses, currency volatility, and price-sensitive consumer demand. Fuel typically accounts for 30–40% of an airline's operating costs, making it a critical variable in overall profitability.

LPG Price Reduced for Households

In contrast to the ATF hike, domestic LPG cylinder prices were reduced by Rs. 30, bringing the new cost of a 14.2-kg non-subsidized cylinder in Delhi to Rs. 877.50. This marks a welcome development for households, particularly amid ongoing inflationary pressures on food and essential goods.

The reduction reflects lower international benchmark prices for butane and propane, as well as a softening of shipping and distribution costs. It also appears to be aligned with broader political and economic goals aimed at easing the cost-of-living burden for lower and middle-income households.

Impact on Airlines and Consumers

For airlines, the increase in ATF prices may prompt a re-evaluation of fare strategies and cost-cutting measures. Smaller and low-cost carriers, in particular, are expected to feel the pinch more acutely. With air travel demand recovering steadily but not uniformly, any rise in input costs could delay profitability goals for the sector.

On the consumer front, the modest LPG price cut offers limited but timely relief. Given that LPG is widely used for cooking, especially in urban and semi-urban households, the reduction helps mitigate the impact of rising food and energy bills.

Volatility in Global Energy Markets

These pricing movements are closely tied to the broader volatility in global energy markets. Crude oil benchmarks have remained unpredictable due to shifting OPEC+ production strategies, geopolitical tensions, and economic uncertainties in major consuming nations. Additionally, fluctuations in the rupee-dollar exchange rate have added further complexity to India's energy import bill.

Industry analysts caution that pricing interventions may remain frequent in the coming months, as Indian oil marketing companies continue to adjust domestic prices in line with international trends and evolving supply chain conditions.

Policy Implications and Forward Outlook

The latest adjustments underline the tightrope Indian authorities are walking: ensuring energy affordability for citizens while maintaining fiscal discipline and allowing market-based pricing to prevail. The government’s focus remains on minimizing subsidy burdens while selectively easing consumer costs where feasible.

Looking ahead, further changes in ATF and LPG pricing will likely depend on international oil price trajectories, inventory levels, and domestic consumption patterns. For now, the contrasting shifts in jet fuel and LPG pricing reflect the complexities of managing a diverse and energy-hungry economy amid persistent global uncertainty.
