Jindal Steel has inaugurated its first coated galvanizing line (CGL 1) at the Angul facility in Odisha, marking a critical milestone in its expansive investment plan. The new galvanizing line will produce high-quality galvanized and galvalume steel products under the Jindal Panther and ZINKALUME brands, targeting diverse sectors such as automotive, appliances, infrastructure, and construction. This capacity enhancement aligns with the company’s ambitious goal to double production to 24 million tonnes per annum, positioning Angul as the world’s largest single-location steel plant. The move underscores Jindal Steel’s commitment to innovation, product excellence, and market leadership.

Strategic Expansion of Coated Steel Capabilities

Jindal Steel’s latest investment culminated in commissioning the first coated galvanizing line at its Angul plant. This state-of-the-art facility will deliver galvanized and galvalume steel products tailored for a broad industrial spectrum, including white goods manufacturing, automotive components, construction, and infrastructure projects. The newly operational line represents a significant augmentation of the company’s product portfolio, strengthening its foothold in high-demand, value-added steel segments.

Technical Specifications and Product Offering

The CGL 1 boasts the capability to process steel sheets ranging from 0.15 mm to 1.50 mm in thickness and widths between 700 mm and 1,400 mm. This versatility allows Jindal Steel to meet precise application requirements, ensuring consistent quality and durability. The galvanizing process imparts corrosion resistance and enhanced thermal properties, essential for applications in harsh environmental conditions.

Two flagship product lines—Jindal Panther Galvanised and ZINKALUME—will be manufactured on this line. Jindal Panther caters predominantly to the appliance and automotive sectors, while ZINKALUME, an aluminium-silicon-zinc alloy coated product, is renowned for superior corrosion resistance and thermal stability. Furthermore, the plant will produce thinner hot-rolled galvanised coils for pre-engineered buildings and high-strength steel tailored for automotive underbody components, underscoring its adaptability.

Leadership Perspective and Market Impact

Chairman Naveen Jindal emphasized that the commissioning of the galvanizing line exemplifies the company’s strategic focus on delivering technologically advanced, premium steel products. This investment is aligned with the evolving needs of key sectors, where quality and reliability are paramount. By expanding its coated steel production, Jindal Steel is well-positioned to capitalize on growing demand across multiple industries.

Capacity Expansion and Industry Leadership

The galvanizing line installation is a cornerstone of Jindal Steel’s broader expansion blueprint for its Angul plant. Currently operating at a capacity of 6 million tonnes per annum (MTPA), the company is scaling up production to 12 MTPA in the near term, with plans to double output to 24 MTPA. Achieving this target would establish Angul as the largest single-location steel production facility globally, enhancing India’s stature in the steel manufacturing sector.

Conclusion: Elevating Quality and Scale in Steel Manufacturing

Jindal Steel’s commissioning of the coated galvanizing line at Angul signals a decisive step toward industrial innovation and market expansion. By marrying advanced technology with expansive capacity growth, the company is reinforcing its commitment to meet the nuanced demands of diverse industries. This development not only bolsters India’s steel manufacturing capabilities but also exemplifies how strategic investments can drive competitive advantage in a rapidly evolving global market.
