The life insurance industry in India has demonstrated strong momentum in the first two months of fiscal year 2025-26, recording a 10.8 per cent increase in new business premium collections. Data from the Life Insurance Council reveals that new premium income surged to Rs 30,463 crore in May 2025, up from Rs 27,034 crore a year earlier. This growth is largely fueled by increased penetration among first-time buyers and steady gains in individual and group premiums, notably driven by Life Insurance Corporation (LIC), which posted double-digit growth in new business and group premiums during the period.

Accelerated Growth in New Business Premiums

Life insurers collectively reported a robust 10.8 per cent year-on-year increase in new business premium collections for the April-May period of FY2025-26, with total collections reaching Rs 52,427 crore compared to Rs 47,293 crore in the same timeframe last year. The upward trajectory continued into May 2025 alone, with premiums rising 12.6 per cent year-on-year to Rs 30,463 crore, signaling sustained consumer demand and confidence in life insurance products.

First-Time Buyers and Individual Premiums Drive Expansion

The industry’s performance is underpinned by strategic efforts to attract first-time insurance buyers, resulting in a healthy 3.35 per cent growth in combined individual premiums for May 2025 and a 2.46 per cent increase on a year-to-date basis. Individual single premiums exhibited a notable 5.21 per cent year-on-year rise to Rs 3,525 crore for May, with growth during April-May standing at 4.89 per cent, illustrating expanding consumer participation in life insurance coverage.

LIC’s Strong Performance

Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC), the largest insurer in the country, reinforced its dominant market position with a 10.27 per cent increase in new business premiums to Rs 18,405.04 crore in May 2025, up from Rs 16,690.39 crore a year prior. LIC also reported a remarkable 13.79 per cent growth in group premiums for May, with group premium collections rising 13.66 per cent in the first two months of the fiscal year, reflecting solid corporate and institutional demand.

Industry Outlook and Implications

The encouraging premium growth across the life insurance sector highlights increasing awareness and adoption of life insurance products in India, driven by targeted outreach and evolving consumer preferences. The positive trends suggest a strengthening financial safety net for individuals and families, alongside broader contributions to the country’s financial services landscape.

Conclusion

As the life insurance industry gains traction through enhanced penetration of first-time buyers and steady growth in individual and group premiums, insurers are poised to capitalize on expanding market opportunities. The strong start to FY2025-26 signals robust sectoral health, positioning life insurers to continue playing a crucial role in India’s journey towards greater financial inclusion and risk protection.
