Known for his innovative grafting techniques, Khan has already created over 300 mango varieties, each carrying a unique name that immortalizes prominent Indian personalities. In his orchard in Malihabad, Khan strives to preserve and expand the rich legacy of mango cultivation, with a mission to keep the fruit’s healing and cultural significance alive for generations. A Legacy Rooted in Innovation and Tribute
Kalimullah Khan’s orchard in Malihabad, near Lucknow, has long been a sanctuary for mango enthusiasts. Revered for his pioneering crossbreeding techniques, Khan has dedicated his life to cultivating unique mango varieties that honor national figures. His latest creation, the ‘Rajnath Aam,’ pays tribute to Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, whom Khan described as a balanced leader committed to peace and dialogue.
Khan believes that by naming mangoes after those who have served the nation, he can help preserve their legacies for future generations. “Sometimes people forget great leaders, but if a mango reminds them of Rajnath Singh's good work, then it's worth it,” he said.
Preserving Malihabad’s Rich Mango Heritage
Malihabad, once home to over 1,300 mango varieties, has witnessed a steady decline in diversity over the decades. Khan has made it his mission to combat this erosion of heritage. He has developed more than 300 new varieties through careful grafting, including namesakes for celebrities such as Sachin Tendulkar, Aishwarya Rai, and Narendra Modi.
Recalling the region’s former abundance, Khan expressed his determination to revive lost varieties. “I’ve been working to preserve and revive them,” he shared, adding that his efforts have restored a part of Malihabad’s horticultural history.
A Lifelong Passion Beyond the Classroom
Khan’s journey with mangoes began in childhood, despite limited formal education. He admitted to struggling in school, failing repeatedly in early grades. But his heart was always in the orchard, not the classroom.
Born in 1945, Khan’s passion has only grown with age. Despite undergoing heart surgery and facing other health challenges, he remains undeterred. “I still feel physically fit,” he said. His enduring spirit is a testament to the power of following one’s passion.
A Global Recognition, Yet Local Challenges
Khan’s work has gained recognition beyond India’s borders. In one memorable incident, he shared how he showcased a mango tree with a unique aroma to the then-World Bank president. Impressed, the dignitary suggested that five acres of land be allotted to Khan to expand his horticultural experiments. However, despite high-level promises, Khan has yet to receive the land, a reminder of the gap between admiration and action.
A Mission That Extends Beyond Taste
For Khan, mangoes are more than a fruit; they are a healing force. He claims to have documented evidence of the mango’s medicinal benefits, calling them a “tonic for the brain” and a source of long-lasting health.
As he continues his work, Khan’s hope is clear: “I want people to keep enjoying different varieties of mangoes long after I’m gone, especially those who truly love this fruit.” His words echo a timeless truth about passion, legacy, and the power of nurturing life—one mango at a time.
