Markets Rebound Amid Dollar Strength and Political Easing: A Look at the Current Financial Landscape

By Manbir Sandhu , 23 April 2025

In a notable turn of events, global markets witnessed a rally following a more conciliatory stance by former U.S. President Donald Trump toward the Federal Reserve and China. His softened rhetoric eased investor anxiety, bolstering the U.S. dollar and nudging equity indices higher. Meanwhile, the Indian rupee weakened slightly against the dollar, influenced by the greenback’s resurgence and broader market dynamics. Brent crude prices edged higher, reflecting geopolitical tensions and supply concerns. With foreign institutional investors resuming purchases in Indian equities, and the USD/INR hovering near key resistance levels, markets are now navigating a delicate equilibrium shaped by global sentiment and domestic resilience.

Dollar Strength Reasserts Dominance

The U.S. dollar has regained momentum in global currency markets, catalyzed by recent comments from Donald Trump, who tempered his criticism of the Federal Reserve and signaled a less combative approach toward China. The dollar index, which tracks the greenback against a basket of six major currencies, climbed 0.37 percent to 99.28. This uptick was underpinned by Trump’s reassurances about Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell's position and his openness to revisiting trade policies, thereby calming investor nerves.

Despite a marginal dip in the U.S. 10-year Treasury yield to 4.34 percent, all three major U.S. stock indices surged by over 2.5 percent, indicating renewed optimism on Wall Street. The Fed's future rate trajectory, once clouded by political pressure, now appears less contentious, offering a more stable backdrop for risk assets globally.

Rupee Slides as Greenback Gains Traction

The Indian rupee depreciated by 15 paise to Rs. 85.34 against the U.S. dollar in early trade on Wednesday, reflecting the dollar’s renewed strength and increased demand for the greenback in international markets. Opening at Rs. 85.24, the rupee quickly lost ground, marking a continued downtrend from its previous close of Rs. 85.19.

Currency market analysts suggest that the rupee’s movement remains range-bound, oscillating between Rs. 85.00 and Rs. 85.40. Anil Kumar Bhansali of Finrex Treasury Advisors noted that Trump's softened stance on Powell and monetary policy has lifted the dollar, reducing near-term downside risk for the USD/INR pair.

Brent Crude Ticks Higher Amid Global Uncertainty

In commodities, Brent crude futures extended gains, rising by 0.83 percent to USD 68 per barrel. The increase was driven by ongoing geopolitical tensions, including fresh sanctions against Iran, and a marked decline in U.S. crude inventories. The global oil market also found support in the more dovish tone from the former U.S. president, which contributed to a broader risk-on sentiment.

Indian Equities Advance on Renewed Foreign Interest

The domestic stock market mirrored global optimism, with the benchmark BSE Sensex gaining 418.53 points (0.53 percent) to close at 80,014.12. The NSE Nifty also saw a healthy rise of 113.95 points (0.47 percent), settling at 24,281.20. This upward momentum was bolstered by sustained buying from foreign institutional investors (FIIs), who injected Rs. 1,290.43 crore into Indian equities on a net basis.

This return of foreign capital reflects a vote of confidence in India's macroeconomic fundamentals, even as the global risk environment remains fluid.

Outlook: Balancing Caution and Opportunity

The juxtaposition of a strong U.S. dollar, rising crude oil prices, and robust FII activity presents a complex backdrop for Indian markets. While the rupee faces depreciation pressure due to global currency dynamics, the equity market continues to exhibit resilience bolstered by foreign inflows and stable domestic consumption patterns.

Going forward, market participants will closely watch signals from the U.S. Federal Reserve, crude oil inventories, and geopolitical developments for cues. In the near term, a cautious but constructive tone is likely to prevail, with investors pricing in a blend of global risks and domestic growth prospects.

Final Thought

While the rupee’s decline may raise import cost concerns, the broader market response underscores the nuanced interplay of global policy shifts and local investor confidence. If political rhetoric continues to lean towards economic pragmatism, both the dollar and risk assets could find firmer footing — signaling a cautious yet promising path ahead for financial markets.
