Markets Slide at the Open as Volatility Grips Equities

By Ricky Tandon , 18 February 2026

Equity markets began the trading session on a cautious note, opening lower before swinging between gains and losses as investors grappled with a mix of global uncertainty and domestic concerns. Early selling pressure reflected fragile risk appetite, driven by weak cues from overseas markets, persistent inflation anxieties, and speculation around the future path of interest rates. As the session progressed, selective buying in heavyweight stocks helped trim losses, though volatility remained elevated. Market participants stayed defensive, preferring to reassess positions amid shifting macroeconomic signals and cautious institutional flows.

Markets Open Lower Amid Global Cues

Domestic equities slipped in early trade, tracking subdued sentiment across global markets. Benchmark indices opened in the red as investors reacted to concerns over sticky inflation and slowing global growth. Asian markets were largely mixed, while overnight weakness on Wall Street weighed on early confidence.

The BSE Sensex and the NSE Nifty 50 both faced selling pressure at the open, reflecting a cautious stance among traders who opted to reduce exposure to riskier assets.

Volatility Reflects Investor Uncertainty

As the session unfolded, markets turned choppy, underscoring the lack of clear directional triggers. Short-term traders took advantage of intraday swings, while long-term investors largely stayed on the sidelines. Analysts attributed the volatility to uncertainty around global monetary policy and mixed corporate signals.

The absence of strong domestic cues meant that even minor developments—such as movements in crude oil prices or fluctuations in the rupee against the dollar—had an outsized impact on sentiment.

Sectoral Performance Remains Mixed

Sectoral trends painted a divided picture. Banking and financial stocks showed resilience, supported by expectations of stable credit growth, while information technology shares remained under pressure amid concerns about slowing overseas demand. FMCG stocks saw selective interest as investors gravitated toward defensives.

Mid-cap and small-cap stocks underperformed the benchmarks, indicating a preference for safety over aggressive risk-taking during uncertain market conditions.

Macro Factors in Focus

Investor attention remains firmly fixed on central bank signals at home and abroad. The policy stance of the Reserve Bank of India continues to influence expectations around liquidity and borrowing costs, while guidance from the Federal Reserve shapes global capital flows.

Persistent inflation concerns and geopolitical risks have further complicated the outlook, prompting institutions to adopt a wait-and-watch approach.

Outlook: Caution Likely to Persist

Market experts expect volatility to remain a defining feature in the near term. With earnings momentum uneven and macroeconomic headwinds unresolved, traders are likely to stay selective, focusing on fundamentally strong companies with stable cash flows.
