In August 2025, the Maruti Suzuki Ertiga emerged as India's top-selling car, with 18,445 units sold, surpassing competitors like the Maruti Dzire and Hyundai Creta. Despite a modest overall growth in the automotive sector, the Ertiga's performance highlights its enduring appeal in the multi-utility vehicle (MUV) segment. The introduction of GST reductions is expected to further enhance its affordability, potentially boosting sales in the upcoming festive season.

Ertiga's Market Leadership

The Maruti Suzuki Ertiga's impressive sales figures underscore its popularity among Indian consumers. Priced from ₹9.12 lakh, the Ertiga offers a compelling combination of affordability and functionality, making it a preferred choice for families and fleet operators. Its spacious interior, fuel efficiency, and reliable performance contribute to its strong market presence.

Sales Performance of Competitors

Following the Ertiga, the Maruti Dzire secured the second position with 16,509 units sold, marking a significant 55% year-on-year increase. The Hyundai Creta, a popular SUV, ranked third with 15,924 units sold, experiencing a 5% decline compared to the previous year. Other notable performers included the Maruti Wagon R with 14,552 units, Tata Nexon at 14,004 units, and the Maruti Brezza with 13,620 units sold. The Tata Nexon and Maruti Dzire were among the few models to register year-on-year growth, indicating a shift in consumer preferences towards these models.

Industry Trends and GST Impact

The Indian automotive market experienced a 2.8% year-on-year growth in August 2025, driven by festive demand and expectations of GST reductions. The GST Council's decision to lower tax rates on small cars and two-wheelers from 28% to 18%, and reduce the effective tax on large cars and SUVs to 40%, is anticipated to make vehicles more affordable and stimulate sales in the coming months. For instance, the Ertiga's price is expected to decrease by up to ₹46,200, depending on the variant, following the GST cut.

Conclusion

The Maruti Suzuki Ertiga's leadership in August 2025 car sales reflects its strong market position and consumer preference. With the impending GST reductions, the Ertiga's affordability is set to improve, potentially boosting its sales further during the festive season. As the automotive industry anticipates increased demand, models like the Ertiga are well-positioned to capitalize on the favorable market conditions.
