Muted Q1 Earnings for Large IT Firms While Mid-Tier Players Poised to Outshine

By Amrita Bhatia , 10 July 2025

India’s top-tier IT services companies are expected to post modest revenue and profit growth for the first quarter, reflecting lingering global economic headwinds, cautious tech spending, and client-led project deferrals. In contrast, mid-tier IT firms are anticipated to outperform, buoyed by aggressive deal wins and their nimble delivery models that appeal to cost-sensitive clients. This divergence signals a shift in the sector’s momentum, highlighting how specialized, flexible players are capturing demand in a volatile environment. As the industry navigates macro uncertainties, analysts forecast that tier-2 companies may continue to deliver sharper earnings trajectories than their larger peers.

Tepid Quarter for Industry Giants

Preliminary projections suggest India’s leading IT services companies—such as TCS, Infosys, and Wipro—will report only marginal sequential growth in the April-June quarter. Analysts attribute this softness to persistent macroeconomic strains in key markets like the United States and Europe, where enterprises are tightening discretionary technology budgets.

Operating margins are also likely to stay under pressure due to wage hikes implemented during the quarter, despite some relief from easing attrition rates. Consequently, the revenue uptick for these firms could hover in the low single digits, underscoring the fragile demand environment for large-scale digital transformation projects.

Mid-Tier Firms Gain Ground

Meanwhile, India’s mid-tier IT players—including firms such as L&T Technology Services, Coforge, and Persistent Systems—are expected to outpace their larger counterparts in both revenue and profit expansion. Their focused vertical expertise, combined with agility in delivery and competitive pricing, has enabled them to win substantial deals even as clients look to optimize costs.

This tier’s ability to quickly pivot and customize offerings makes them attractive partners for enterprises pursuing selective modernization, cloud migration, and data analytics projects without committing to sprawling multi-year contracts. As a result, mid-tier firms are likely to report quarterly growth figures that outperform industry averages.

Strategic Shifts and Emerging Trends

The divergence in performance between large and mid-tier firms also points to evolving client preferences. Enterprises are increasingly favoring partners who can execute niche, outcome-driven engagements, rather than expansive, time-consuming transformations.

Large IT firms, recognizing this pivot, have begun intensifying their efforts in building domain-specific platforms and next-generation AI-led solutions. However, the benefits of these investments may take several quarters to fully materialize, keeping their near-term growth subdued relative to the more tactical wins enjoyed by mid-tier rivals.

Looking Ahead: Sustained Caution with Pockets of Optimism

While the overall outlook for the IT sector remains cautious amid global economic crosscurrents, industry leaders expect demand to stabilize gradually in the coming quarters. Key drivers include rising interest in generative AI applications, cybersecurity solutions, and regulatory tech services.

For now, investors and analysts will closely watch how the earnings season shapes up, especially the commentary on deal pipelines and client spending intentions. The current trend suggests that while tier-1 firms may experience a slower rebound, the nimbleness of mid-sized players positions them well to capitalize on immediate opportunities.
