Indian Stock Markets End Flat After Volatile Trading Session Amid Mixed Global Cues

Indian equity benchmarks ended largely unchanged on Thursday after a choppy session marked by alternating gains and losses. Investors remained cautious amid conflicting global signals, fluctuating crude oil prices, and persistent concerns over inflation and interest rates. Despite early optimism fueled by positive corporate earnings and foreign inflows, profit booking in heavyweight stocks erased much of the day’s gains. Market participants also tracked developments in global bond yields and U.S. Federal Reserve commentary for direction. Analysts described the session as one of “high volatility and low conviction,” reflecting investors’ short-term uncertainty.

Benchmark Indices Close Mixed After Unsteady Trade

The benchmark BSE Sensex fluctuated throughout the day, closing marginally lower at 65,400 points after touching an intraday high of 65,850. Similarly, the NSE Nifty 50 ended flat at 19,520, with gains in select banking and auto stocks offset by weakness in IT and metal counters.

Broader market indices also exhibited subdued movement, with the Nifty Midcap and Smallcap indices ending nearly unchanged. Market breadth remained neutral, indicating an even split between advancing and declining stocks. Analysts attributed the lack of direction to cautious positioning ahead of key economic data releases, including domestic inflation numbers and global macro indicators.

Global Trends and Domestic Triggers Shape Sentiment

Investors monitored global markets closely as volatility persisted in U.S. equities and European indices following mixed economic data. Rising U.S. Treasury yields and concerns over prolonged monetary tightening by the Federal Reserve weighed on sentiment. In Asia, major indices traded on a narrow range, mirroring the cautious tone in Indian markets.

On the domestic front, the Reserve Bank of India’s latest commentary reinforced its commitment to keeping inflation under control, signaling a continued focus on monetary discipline. Meanwhile, crude oil prices hovered around USD 85 per barrel, adding to worries about imported inflation and corporate cost pressures.

Sectoral Performance: Autos Shine, IT Drags

Among key sectoral indices, auto and banking stocks offered modest support to the market. Leading auto manufacturers gained on the back of strong festive-season demand and better-than-expected sales figures. The Nifty Auto index rose about 0.8%, driven by stocks such as Mahindra & Mahindra, Maruti Suzuki, and Tata Motors.

Conversely, information technology stocks remained under pressure following weak guidance from global peers and concerns about a slowdown in discretionary tech spending. The Nifty IT index fell 0.6%, led by declines in Infosys, Wipro, and HCLTech. Metal and energy stocks also experienced mild selling, tracking softness in global commodity prices.

Foreign Flows and Institutional Activity

Foreign institutional investors (FIIs) remained net buyers for the second consecutive session, injecting around Rs. 800 crore into Indian equities, according to provisional exchange data. Domestic institutional investors (DIIs), however, booked profits in select large-cap names, limiting market momentum.

Analysts noted that consistent foreign inflows signal improving confidence in India’s long-term growth prospects, supported by robust macro fundamentals and stable policy direction. However, near-term volatility is likely to persist as global risk appetite fluctuates.

Outlook: Market Consolidation Likely to Continue

Market experts expect Indian equities to remain range-bound in the near term, with traders focusing on corporate earnings, macroeconomic data, and global cues. Technical analysts suggest that the Nifty may continue to consolidate between 19,400 and 19,650 levels before establishing a clear directional trend.

While India’s economic fundamentals remain strong—buoyed by healthy credit growth, resilient domestic demand, and steady FDI inflows—external headwinds such as high global interest rates and geopolitical uncertainties could cap upside momentum.

“Volatility will likely remain elevated as investors balance optimism about India’s growth story with caution over global risks,” said a senior market strategist at a Mumbai-based brokerage.
