Analyst Raises Doubts Over Apple’s Move to India, Cuts Stock Target Amid Tariff Concerns

By Anant Kumar , 28 April 2025

Prominent analyst Craig Moffett has expressed skepticism over Apple's plans to shift its iPhone assembly to India, suggesting such a move may be unrealistic due to unresolved tariff-related issues. Moffett, who recently lowered his price target for Apple by 33%, argues that while relocating production could alleviate some costs, it will not fully address the broader challenges posed by global trade tensions. His concerns also extend to the potential slowdown in consumer demand and resistance from Apple’s supply chain, particularly in China, where the company faces strong competition and tariff-related obstacles.

Analyst Doubts Feasibility of Apple’s Shift to India

Apple's recent attempt to diversify its production by considering India as a new hub for iPhone assembly has raised eyebrows among industry experts. Leading analyst Craig Moffett has cast doubt on this strategy, calling it "unrealistic" in a memo to clients. Moffett, a highly regarded figure in the finance world, pointed out that even if Apple were to shift assembly to India, the majority of the company’s components would still be sourced from China.

This continued reliance on Chinese manufacturing complicates the idea of mitigating the impact of tariffs. Moffett highlighted that moving production to India could address some tariff challenges but would not resolve the core issue, as the components and essential parts would still be subject to high tariffs when imported from China. In an interview on CNBC’s “Fast Money,” he stressed that the move may help “to some degree,” but warned that significant hurdles remain, especially with the ongoing global trade war.

Trade War and Tariffs: A Double-Edged Sword for Apple

Moffett’s concerns go beyond logistics and production. He emphasizes that the broader issue Apple faces is the global trade war, which places the company in a precarious position both in terms of costs and sales. He noted that moving assembly to India may alleviate some of the tariff-related costs, but this doesn’t address the larger issue of slowing demand due to economic headwinds.

"Moving assembly to India might (and we emphasize might) help with the former," Moffett stated, referring to the costs associated with tariffs. "The latter may ultimately be the bigger issue." Moffett’s remarks underscore the reality that Apple's market performance is significantly impacted by the ongoing geopolitical tensions, which are particularly challenging for tech companies heavily reliant on Chinese manufacturing.

Moffett Slashes Apple’s Price Target and Calls Out Valuation Concerns

In light of these uncertainties, Moffett reduced his price target for Apple’s stock to $141 per share, down from his previous target of $184. This revised target suggests a potential 33% drop from Apple’s last closing price, making it the lowest on Wall Street according to FactSet data. Moffett clarified that his decision isn’t a reflection of his opinion on Apple’s core business but rather a cautionary stance due to the company’s high valuation and exposure to external market pressures.

“I don’t think of myself as the biggest Apple bear,” Moffett explained. “I think quite highly of Apple. My concern about Apple has been the valuation more than the company.” Despite his confidence in Apple’s fundamentals, Moffett believes that the current market conditions make the stock too expensive, given the growing risks tied to tariffs and slowing consumer demand.

The Impact of Tariffs on Apple’s Consumer Demand

One of the critical issues highlighted by Moffett is the potential for "demand destruction," especially as U.S. carriers like AT&T, Verizon, and T-Mobile have refused to absorb the additional costs created by tariffs on handsets. These carriers have publicly stated that consumers will have to bear the brunt of the tariff costs, which could lead to longer phone replacement cycles and slower upgrade rates.

Such demand destruction is likely to further pressure Apple’s revenue, as consumers may delay purchases or opt for alternative devices due to higher prices. This scenario raises concerns that Apple may face weaker-than-expected sales growth in the coming quarters, particularly in the competitive smartphone market.

China’s Backlash and Intensifying Competition

Another pressing concern for Moffett is the backlash Apple is facing in China due to U.S. tariffs. As China retaliates against American products, Apple’s iPhone sales in the country have suffered, with local competitors such as Huawei and Vivo gaining ground. Moffett described the situation as a “very real problem,” noting that volumes of sales are increasingly being diverted to domestic brands.

The intensifying competition within China, combined with the ongoing tariff challenges, places Apple in a difficult position in one of its most critical markets. As the U.S.-China trade war continues to escalate, the repercussions for Apple’s sales strategy in China are likely to be significant.

Apple's Recent Performance and Upcoming Earnings Report

Despite Moffett’s bearish outlook, Apple’s stock recently experienced a 6% increase, marking a positive week for the company. This rise comes ahead of Apple’s upcoming quarterly earnings report, set to be released next Thursday. Investors will be watching closely to see how Apple’s performance is tracking amid these ongoing challenges, especially with the uncertainties surrounding tariffs, consumer demand, and production shifts.

While Apple remains a dominant force in the tech world, its stock price is increasingly under pressure as analysts, including Moffett, weigh in on the broader economic environment and the company’s ability to adapt. The earnings report will offer further insights into how Apple is navigating these hurdles and whether its plans to diversify its supply chain will bear fruit.

Conclusion: Navigating Uncertainty in a Turbulent Market

Craig Moffett’s analysis highlights the complex challenges facing Apple as it seeks to navigate the turbulent waters of global trade, tariff battles, and slowing consumer demand. While the company’s fundamentals remain strong, the ongoing geopolitical and economic factors are creating significant headwinds. Moffett’s cautious stance, reflected in his lowered price target, underscores the reality that Apple must not only contend with external pressures but also adjust its valuation expectations in a market that is anything but predictable. As Apple prepares for its earnings report, investors will need to assess whether the company can overcome these challenges and deliver on its growth potential in an increasingly uncertain global landscape.
