SEBI Develops AI-Powered System to Strengthen Cybersecurity Oversight

By Geeta Maurya , 3 January 2026

The Securities and Exchange Board of India is advancing its technology framework with the development of an artificial intelligence–based tool designed to analyze cyber safety across regulated market entities. The initiative aims to enhance real-time monitoring, identify vulnerabilities, and improve preparedness against cyber threats in India’s financial markets. As trading, settlement, and investor services become increasingly digital, the regulator’s move reflects a proactive shift toward technology-driven supervision. Market experts believe the AI system could significantly strengthen resilience, reduce systemic risk, and reinforce investor confidence in the integrity of capital market infrastructure.

A Technology-First Regulatory Approach

SEBI’s proposed AI tool represents a strategic evolution in regulatory oversight as cyber risks grow in scale and sophistication. Financial institutions, stock exchanges, depositories, and intermediaries now rely heavily on digital systems, making cybersecurity a matter of market stability rather than mere operational hygiene.

By leveraging artificial intelligence, the regulator aims to move beyond periodic audits toward continuous, data-driven surveillance of cyber preparedness across the securities ecosystem.

How the AI Tool Is Expected to Work

The AI-based system is expected to analyze large volumes of technical and compliance data submitted by regulated entities. Using pattern recognition and anomaly detection, the tool could flag potential vulnerabilities, delayed responses to cyber incidents, or deviations from prescribed security standards.

Such an approach would allow SEBI to prioritize supervisory attention, intervene earlier, and issue targeted advisories, rather than relying solely on post-incident reporting.

Why Cyber Safety Matters for Markets

Cybersecurity failures in financial markets can trigger far-reaching consequences, from trading disruptions to data breaches and erosion of investor trust. With rising retail participation and algorithmic trading volumes, the cost of cyber incidents has increased sharply.

Analysts note that proactive cyber risk management is now integral to market integrity. SEBI’s initiative aligns India’s regulatory practices with global trends, where supervisors are increasingly deploying advanced analytics and automation to manage systemic risk.

Implications for Market Participants

For brokers, asset managers, and market infrastructure institutions, the AI-driven oversight framework may lead to higher compliance expectations. Entities may need to invest more in cybersecurity infrastructure, documentation, and response protocols to meet evolving standards.

However, industry participants also stand to benefit from clearer benchmarks and earlier detection of risks, potentially reducing the likelihood of disruptive cyber events.

Looking Ahead

SEBI’s move to adopt artificial intelligence for cyber safety analysis underscores its intent to future-proof India’s capital markets. As financial systems become more complex and interconnected, regulatory technology will play a central role in maintaining stability.

If implemented effectively, the AI tool could set a new benchmark for supervisory innovation, positioning India among global leaders in technology-enabled financial regulation while reinforcing confidence in the digital foundations of its markets.
