Rupee Slides to Historic Low as Dollar Strength and Global Uncertainty Intensify

By Keshav Kulshrestha , 5 January 2026

The Indian rupee weakened sharply to 90.24 against the US dollar, marking a significant depreciation amid mounting global and domestic pressures. The decline reflects a combination of sustained dollar strength, volatile crude oil prices, and cautious investor sentiment across emerging markets. Persistent foreign capital outflows and concerns over global interest rate trajectories further weighed on the currency. While the Reserve Bank of India is believed to be closely monitoring market movements, near-term volatility remains elevated. Currency traders and economists now expect the rupee’s trajectory to remain sensitive to global cues, energy prices, and capital flow dynamics.

Rupee Hits a New Low

The Indian rupee fell to 90.24 against the US dollar during the latest trading session, extending its downward trend and underscoring persistent stress in the foreign exchange market. The move reflects heightened demand for the dollar, driven by safe-haven flows and expectations that global interest rates may remain elevated for longer than previously anticipated.

Market participants noted that the depreciation was gradual but steady, suggesting structural pressures rather than a single disruptive trigger.

Global Factors Driving Weakness

A resurgent US dollar has emerged as the primary catalyst behind the rupee’s slide. Strong US economic data and a firm stance by the Federal Reserve on inflation have supported the greenback, putting pressure on emerging market currencies.

In addition, elevated crude oil prices have added to India’s import bill, increasing dollar demand from oil marketing companies. Geopolitical uncertainties and uneven global growth prospects have further dampened risk appetite, prompting investors to shift funds toward dollar-denominated assets.

Capital Flows and Domestic Considerations

Foreign institutional investors have remained cautious, with intermittent equity and debt outflows adding strain to the rupee. While India’s macroeconomic fundamentals remain relatively stable, the widening interest rate differential and global liquidity tightening have limited the currency’s ability to recover.

Economists point out that strong domestic consumption and steady tax collections offer some buffer, but external headwinds continue to dominate currency movements in the short term.

RBI’s Role and Market Expectations

The Reserve Bank of India is expected to use its forex reserves strategically to smooth excessive volatility rather than defend a specific level. Analysts believe that orderly depreciation may be tolerated as long as inflationary risks remain contained.

Looking ahead, the rupee’s direction will hinge on global monetary policy signals, crude oil trends, and the pace of foreign investment flows. Until clearer signals emerge, currency markets are likely to remain cautious, with the rupee trading under persistent pressure.
