India’s automobile retail market recorded a 7.71 percent year-on-year growth in 2025, reflecting resilient consumer demand and a gradual recovery across vehicle segments, according to data from the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA). The expansion was supported by improved supply conditions, easing inflationary pressures, and steady financing availability. While two-wheelers and passenger vehicles led the momentum, commercial vehicle sales showed signs of stabilization. Industry experts said the growth underscores the sector’s adaptability amid economic uncertainty, even as dealers continue to navigate margin pressures and shifting consumer preferences.

Retail Sales Show Broad-Based Improvement

Auto retail sales in India advanced 7.71 percent in 2025, signaling a broad-based recovery across key categories. Passenger vehicles and two-wheelers contributed significantly to overall growth, benefiting from pent-up demand and improved model availability.

FADA noted that inventory levels normalized during the year, allowing dealerships to better match supply with consumer demand and reduce delivery timelines.

Consumer Sentiment and Financing Support Demand

Improved consumer sentiment, supported by stable employment conditions and moderating inflation, played a critical role in sustaining vehicle purchases. Competitive financing options and targeted promotional campaigns further encouraged buyers, particularly in urban and semi-urban markets.

Industry analysts said easier access to credit remained a crucial factor, especially for first-time buyers and price-sensitive segments.

Segment Trends Reflect Mixed Momentum

While two-wheelers and passenger vehicles posted healthy gains, growth in the commercial vehicle segment remained uneven, reflecting cautious capital expenditure and logistics demand. Tractor sales also saw fluctuations, influenced by monsoon patterns and rural income trends.

Dealers pointed out that demand continues to shift toward feature-rich and fuel-efficient models, including electric and hybrid vehicles.

Dealer Challenges Persist Despite Growth

Despite higher volumes, dealership profitability remained under pressure due to rising operating costs and intense competition. FADA highlighted the need for sustainable margins and inventory discipline to ensure long-term viability for retailers.

The industry continues to engage with manufacturers and policymakers to address structural challenges affecting dealer economics.

Outlook: Cautious Optimism for the Auto Sector

Looking ahead, industry stakeholders expect moderate growth to continue, supported by new product launches, infrastructure development, and evolving mobility preferences. However, external risks such as fuel price volatility and global economic uncertainty could influence demand patterns.

FADA’s 2025 data reinforces the view that India’s auto retail sector remains on a steady, if selective, growth trajectory.
