Sensex, Nifty Tumble as Metal and IT Stocks Trigger Broad Market Selloff

By Ricky Tandon , 16 February 2026

Indian equity benchmarks plunged sharply, with the Sensex and Nifty registering steep declines amid aggressive selling in metal and information technology stocks. Heightened global uncertainty, concerns over slowing demand and persistent foreign institutional outflows weighed heavily on investor sentiment. Commodity-linked counters fell on weaker international price cues, while IT stocks retreated amid fears of reduced technology spending in key overseas markets. The selloff was broad-based, reflecting risk aversion across sectors. Analysts caution that volatility may persist in the near term, although long-term structural drivers of India’s growth story remain fundamentally intact.

Benchmark Indices Record Sharp Declines

The domestic equity market witnessed significant turbulence as the BSE Sensex and Nifty 50 closed markedly lower. Heavy selling pressure in frontline stocks dragged the indices down, eroding recent gains and dampening near-term market sentiment.

Traders attributed the decline to a combination of global macroeconomic concerns and sector-specific headwinds. Foreign portfolio investors continued to pare exposure to emerging markets, intensifying downward momentum in large-cap counters.

Market breadth remained decisively negative, with decliners significantly outnumbering gainers across both exchanges.

Metal Stocks Lead the Downturn

Metal stocks were among the hardest hit, tracking weakness in international commodity prices. Fears of slowing global industrial activity, particularly in key consuming regions, weighed on base metal demand expectations.

Lower global prices for steel and other industrial metals pressured valuations of domestic producers. Analysts noted that cyclical sectors such as metals are particularly sensitive to global growth projections and trade dynamics.

As export prospects softened, investor confidence in near-term earnings visibility weakened, prompting profit booking in previously outperforming counters.

IT Sector Faces Global Demand Concerns

The information technology segment also witnessed pronounced selling. Investors reacted to indications of moderation in discretionary technology spending across major Western markets.

Large-cap IT companies, which derive substantial revenues from North America and Europe, faced valuation compression amid concerns over slower deal pipelines and cautious corporate budgets. Market participants highlighted that currency stability provided limited support as growth outlook uncertainties dominated sentiment.

Given the sector’s significant weightage in benchmark indices, IT stocks amplified the broader market correction.

Broader Market Implications

The downturn was not confined to metals and IT. Financials, industrials and select consumer stocks also traded lower, reflecting widespread risk aversion.

Volatility indicators edged higher, suggesting defensive positioning by institutional investors. Derivatives data pointed to increased hedging activity, underscoring caution ahead of upcoming global economic data releases.

Despite the selloff, market strategists emphasize that corrections are a recurring feature of equity cycles. India’s structural growth narrative—anchored by infrastructure spending, domestic consumption and digital expansion—remains intact over the medium term.

Outlook for Investors

Near-term direction will likely depend on global macroeconomic signals, commodity price stability and foreign fund flows. Analysts recommend selective accumulation of fundamentally strong companies during periods of heightened volatility.

While the sharp decline in the Sensex and Nifty underscores the sensitivity of markets to global cues, long-term investors may view such corrections as opportunities within a broader growth trajectory.
