United Breweries’ Q4 Growth Amidst Declining Revenue: A Mixed Outlook for FY 2025

By Gurleen Bajwa , 11 May 2025
s

United Breweries Ltd (UBL), the Indian arm of Dutch brewing giant Heineken, reported a 19.87% increase in consolidated net profit to Rs. 97.76 crore for the January-March quarter of FY 2024-25. However, the company’s revenue from operations dropped by 7.54%, reflecting challenging market conditions. Despite a decline in both revenue and total income, UBL managed to keep costs in check, with a decrease in expenses by 8.54%. For the full financial year, net profit rose by 7.67%, and total consolidated income increased by 5.37%. The company’s stock saw a modest rise, closing at Rs. 2,184.45 on the BSE.

A Quarter of Contrasting Performance

United Breweries Ltd’s results for the January-March quarter of FY 2024-25 offer a mixed view of the company’s performance, highlighting both strengths and challenges. The beer maker reported a 19.87% rise in consolidated net profit, reaching Rs. 97.76 crore, up from Rs. 81.55 crore in the same period last year. This growth in profit suggests the company’s ability to navigate difficult market conditions, leveraging operational efficiencies and cost controls.

Despite the profit growth, UBL’s revenue from operations declined by 7.54%, totaling Rs. 4,427.15 crore, compared to Rs. 4,788.68 crore in the corresponding period of the previous year. This revenue drop raises questions about the sustainability of the company’s top-line growth, especially in the context of the broader market environment.

Cost Control Measures Help Offset Revenue Drop

While the decline in revenue signals a slowdown, UBL demonstrated a firm grip on its cost structure. Total expenses for the quarter fell by 8.54%, reaching Rs. 4,303.09 crore compared to Rs. 4,705.93 crore in the previous year. This reduction in expenses can largely be attributed to streamlined operations and more efficient use of resources, helping to protect profitability despite the falling sales numbers.

Total income, which includes other income sources, also saw a decline of 7.9%, reaching Rs. 4,435.16 crore. This is consistent with the revenue drop, indicating a more challenging environment for UBL’s business operations during the quarter.

Positive Full-Year Results Amidst Headwinds

For the financial year ending March 31, 2025, United Breweries saw a 7.67% increase in net profit, amounting to Rs. 442.41 crore, up from Rs. 410.86 crore the previous year. This performance reflects the company’s resilience and ability to deliver consistent profitability, despite fluctuations in revenue.

Moreover, the company’s total consolidated income for FY 2025 rose by 5.37%, totaling Rs. 19,444.44 crore, compared to Rs. 18,468.04 crore in FY 2024. This growth is positive, but it is important to note that the rise in income was modest in comparison to the previous year’s growth trajectory.

Stock Performance and Market Sentiment

Shares of United Breweries Ltd saw a modest increase of 2.12%, closing at Rs. 2,184.45 on the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) on the day the company announced its quarterly results. While the rise in stock price reflects investor optimism, the mixed results indicate that market sentiment remains cautious. The company’s ability to maintain profitability amidst declining revenue and total income suggests that its strategic cost control measures are paying off. However, the stock market's response to these results will likely depend on the company’s ability to sustain growth in the coming quarters.

Looking Ahead: Balancing Growth and Efficiency

As United Breweries navigates through a challenging market environment, the company’s ability to balance growth with operational efficiency will be crucial. The dip in revenue, coupled with rising costs in some areas, suggests that UBL must focus on driving innovation in its product offerings, exploring new revenue streams, and expanding its market presence to sustain long-term growth.

The outlook for FY 2026 will depend largely on the global beer market trends, including raw material prices, regulatory changes, and shifts in consumer preferences. Additionally, UBL’s strategic relationship with Heineken could provide significant opportunities for brand expansion and operational synergies, but the company will need to address its revenue challenges to ensure sustained profitability.

Conclusion

United Breweries Ltd’s performance for Q4 FY 2024-25 presents a picture of profitability amid adversity. While the company managed to boost its net profit, the decline in revenue raises questions about its future growth prospects. As UBL focuses on operational efficiency and cost containment, the company must find ways to reverse the downward revenue trajectory in the coming quarters. Investors and market analysts will be closely monitoring how UBL addresses these challenges and positions itself for sustained success in the competitive beer market.
