Rupee Edges Lower Amid Dollar Demand, But Domestic Markets Provide Resilience

By Amrita Bhatia , 15 May 2025

The Indian rupee depreciated by 18 paise, closing at 85.50 against the US dollar on Thursday, pressured by strong dollar demand from importers and foreign capital outflows. Despite this, the currency was supported by robust domestic equity gains and a decline in global crude oil prices. Market participants are closely monitoring upcoming US economic data and Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell’s remarks for further direction. Analysts remain cautiously optimistic about the rupee’s near-term trajectory, citing easing geopolitical tensions and improving global risk appetite as potential tailwinds. The equity markets rallied sharply, fueled by foreign institutional investor purchases and positive investor sentiment.

Currency Market Dynamics: Rupee Softens on Dollar Demand

The rupee succumbed to depreciation pressures on Thursday, retreating by 18 paise to settle at 85.50 per US dollar in provisional trade. The currency’s decline was primarily driven by heightened demand for the greenback from importers seeking to hedge payment obligations, coupled with foreign fund outflows that exerted additional strain.

Interbank trading saw the rupee fluctuate between an intra-day high of 85.48 and a low of 85.73 before closing near its lows. This reversal followed a marginally firmer close on Wednesday when the rupee gained 4 paise to end at 85.32. Over the last two sessions, the rupee showed initial strength but eventually relinquished most gains, reflecting underlying market volatility.

Domestic Market Resilience and Oil Price Support

Offsetting some currency weakness, Indian equity markets exhibited marked resilience on Thursday. The benchmark BSE Sensex surged 1,200.18 points, or 1.48%, ending at 82,530.74, while the broader Nifty 50 index climbed 395.20 points, or 1.60%, to 25,062.10. Foreign institutional investors reinforced market confidence by net purchasing equities worth Rs 931.80 crore, signaling continued foreign interest in Indian equities despite currency volatility.

Concurrently, a notable decline in Brent crude futures — down 3.72% to USD 63.63 per barrel — contributed to easing inflation concerns and reduced pressure on the import bill, thereby providing some relief to the rupee.

Global Economic Indicators and Federal Reserve Outlook

Looking ahead, analysts highlight a critical week for the rupee and financial markets as attention turns to several key US economic indicators, including Producer Price Index (PPI), retail sales, manufacturing data, industrial production, and weekly unemployment claims. These data points will shape expectations around the US Federal Reserve’s monetary policy trajectory.

Traders are particularly focused on remarks from Fed Chair Jerome Powell, whose speech could clarify the central bank’s stance on interest rates and potential policy easing, directly influencing dollar strength and emerging market currencies like the rupee.

Analyst Perspective and Market Outlook

Anuj Choudhary, Research Analyst at Mirae Asset Sharekhan, remains cautiously optimistic. He anticipates the rupee to maintain a positive bias supported by upbeat domestic market performance and improved global risk sentiment. Choudhary underscores the easing of geopolitical tensions between India and Pakistan and progress in US-China trade relations as additional supportive factors for the rupee.

He projects the USD-INR spot rate to trade within a range of 85.20 to 85.90 in the near term, suggesting a cautious trading band as markets digest evolving domestic and global cues.

Conclusion

The rupee’s modest retreat on Thursday reflects a confluence of dollar demand and foreign capital movements, set against a backdrop of encouraging domestic market rallies and lower oil prices. As investors await critical US economic data and Federal Reserve signals, the currency’s path will likely remain tethered to global risk appetite and geopolitical developments. Navigating this complex environment, market participants are poised for a cautious yet optimistic outlook on the rupee’s stability.
