Mediatek’s India Strategy Anchored in Talent, Not Geopolitics, Says CFO

By Keshav Kulshrestha , 22 May 2025

Mediatek’s expanding footprint in India is driven predominantly by the country’s robust talent pool rather than geopolitical considerations, according to David Ku, the company’s Co-COO and CFO. While the fabless semiconductor giant acknowledges challenges in developing chip manufacturing capabilities domestically, it continues to invest in software development and research in India. Ku underscored that geopolitical shifts, such as the US-China tariff dispute, have limited influence on their long-term strategy, which prioritizes talent acquisition. With India emerging as a significant market, Mediatek also unveiled plans to introduce the world’s smallest 2-nanometer chip, initially targeting smartphone applications.

Talent, Not Geopolitics, Steering India Investment

Mediatek’s commitment to India is fundamentally rooted in the availability of skilled professionals, rather than geopolitical dynamics. David Ku emphasized that the company’s decision to build a global center in India predated recent geopolitical tensions, reinforcing that talent acquisition remains the foremost driver of their operations.

Currently employing approximately 1,200 people in India, Mediatek is focused on augmenting this workforce over time. “We are still short of talents globally, and India offers a strong reservoir of software expertise,” Ku explained, underscoring the company’s strategic focus on software innovation within the country.

Semiconductor Manufacturing in India: A Complex, Long-Term Prospect

While Mediatek is investing heavily in India’s software sector and research capabilities, Ku cautioned that developing local semiconductor manufacturing, such as chip production or assembly, remains a complex and lengthy process. The country currently has limited workforce experience in semiconductor fabrication, particularly in foundry and packaging operations, which are critical components of the supply chain.

Mediatek operates as a fabless entity, relying on strategic partnerships with manufacturers like Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) for chip fabrication. TSMC’s ongoing investments, such as the new facility in Arizona slated for mass production within four years, highlight the complexity and scale involved in semiconductor manufacturing expansion.

India’s Role in Mediatek’s Global Supply Chain and Market Strategy

Although India is not yet a hub for Mediatek’s chip production, the firm views the country as a pivotal market with substantial growth potential. Ku reaffirmed the company’s commitment to continued investment in research and development, alongside intensifying marketing efforts across the region.

Mediatek’s leadership believes India’s prominence in software development offers a competitive advantage, even as manufacturing capabilities evolve gradually. This approach aligns with broader trends emphasizing innovation and human capital as primary assets in the technology sector.

Cutting-Edge Innovation: The 2-Nanometer Chip Rollout

In a significant technological milestone, Mediatek announced plans to launch the world’s smallest chip measuring 2 nanometers, starting September. Initially targeted at smartphones, the advanced chip is expected to extend its application to other consumer electronics subsequently.

This innovation reflects Mediatek’s ongoing leadership across diverse device segments, including smartphones, televisions, and Wi-Fi routers, underpinning its position as a market front-runner.

Conclusion

Mediatek’s India strategy is emblematic of a broader industry trend where talent acquisition and technological innovation take precedence over geopolitical calculations. While semiconductor manufacturing remains a distant goal for India, the nation’s growing software expertise and expanding consumer market make it an indispensable component of Mediatek’s global operations. With cutting-edge developments such as the 2-nanometer chip on the horizon, Mediatek is poised to maintain its leadership while nurturing its strategic presence in India.
